REMINDER: Tax Exempt ATF Form 1 Application Deadline Approaches
Our friends at Silencer Shop are reminding everyone that in three weeks (April 26, 2023) they plan to stop taking new orders for tax-exempt ATF Form 1 applications. ATF’s deadline to submit all tax-exempt Form 1s is May 31, 2023 but, based on high demand, Silencer Shop expects to stop taking orders by end-of-day on April 26 to ensure all customers have time to complete their submission by ATF’s cutoff. As a friendly reminder, both TFB & Silencer Shop don’t make the rules or laws, but we want to help you stay informed so you can make the best decision for your situation.
SILENCER SATURDAY #218: The Kobayashi Maru – The Form 1 No-Win Scenario
Good afternoon everyone and thank you for joining us for another Silencer Saturday brought to you by Yankee Hill Machine, manufacturers of the YHM Turbo K rifle suppressor. Last week we swapped wipes in the B&T USA STATION SIX9 pistol. This week we are once again forced to pause silencer reviews for a look at a no-win scenario for Form 1 makers. Recently applicants received an email from the ATF requesting additional information on their plans and materials used to build their silencer. Failure to provide the requested information would result in Form 1 applications being disapproved and the $200 NFA tax refunded. So, what do we do now? Let’s dig in.
Is the ATF Mass Disapproving Home-Made Form 1 Suppressors?
Some of you may have heard that in recent days nearly everyone who has submitted a Form 1 to build a suppressor has been flat out denied by the ATF. Rumors of a mass denial started to stir on popular firearms forums and other online platforms such as the NFA subreddit where many users have commented that they’ve all recently received form 1 denial specifically to build suppressors. Many of the people receiving these denied forms are also claiming that the reason field is exactly the same, thus leading many to believe that the ATF is denying any and all Form 1 submissions to build a suppressor.
Why is my Form 1 "Pending Research" and How does it Affect Processing Time?
One of the more intriguing firearms from SHOT Show 2022 was the Czech Weapons CSV-9, a modular 9mm pistol caliber carbine from the Czech Republic. Four Peaks Imports of Arizona is going to be importing small batches of these in pistol form and in at least two configurations, and Czech Weapons’ website lists a number of different “Versions” of the CSV-9 that can be run on a single receiver.
SILENCER SATURDAY #209: Solvent Trapped – The ATF Warning Letter
Good morning fellow suppressor enthusiasts and welcome back to TFB’s Silencer Saturday brought to you by Yankee Hill Machine, manufacturers of the YHM Turbo K. Last week we got a Christmas morning peek at the new LMT-AT ION 30 rifle suppressor and I had hoped to bring you a more in-depth look at it’s performance and features on New Years Day. However, we need to postpone the ION 30 until next weekend and talk about the ATF warning letter myself and hundreds, maybe thousands, of other American shooters received this week. Let’s take a look at the letter.
SILENCER SATURDAY #173: The LEGAL Oil Filter Suppressor
Good afternoon friends and welcome back to another edition of TFB’s Silencer Saturday brought to you by Yankee Hill Machine, manufacturers of the YHM R9 suppressor. Last week got to spend some time with the impressive CGS Hydra rimfire suppressors. This week we get our hands dirty with the manufacturing of a legal oil filter suppressor. Is it worth the NFA Form 1 application time and $200 to make one for yourself? Let’s take a look.
Form 1 DIY Panzerfaust
The niche market for legally registered disposable anti-tank weapons may soon experience a well overdue boom with the introduction of a historically accurate Panzerfaust 60 copy you can make at home. Jonathan Wild started the project last year which will eventually culminate in a book detailing how to build one yourself from scratch.
Is This The Oldest National Firearms Act Form 1?
What’s your oldest Form 1 and what does it cover? Well, earlier this week the Cody Firearms Museum in Cody, Wyoming recently found their oldest Form 1, the physical form itself, and it is just over 85 years old. Filed in Arizona by Mr. R.F. Chatfield-Taylor to cover a short barrelled rifle which is now part of their collection.
SILENCER SATURDAY #121: Build Your Own Form 1 Suppressor – Part 1
Good afternoon everyone and thanks for joining us for another edition of TFB’s Silencer Saturday brought to you by Yankee Hill Machine, manufacturers of the inexpensive yet very effective Turbo K 5.56mm Suppressor. Last week we took a look at the new YHM MARC Chassis, A tough suppressor cover from Liberty’s Defense and the cheap insurance offered by suppressor alignment rods. Today we finally dive back into a subject I started here at TFB four years ago – building your own Form 1 Suppressor. Yes, it’s legal to build your own silencer, no it’s not hard and the process is very rewarding. Let’s get to work.
Don't Panic! NFA Applications Still Being Processed During Coronapocalypse
I know what many of you are thinking right now: “Pete, this is a major crisis, no one cares about your g*ddamn short barrels, silencers or vertical fore grips!” That’s where you are wrong, friend. In these times that try men’s and women’s souls, the things that bring us joy are even more important. While you wait for that incubation period to pass, you don’t need an additional timeline weighing you down. Have no fear, our friends at the American Suppressor Association are reporting that the ATF’s NFA Division are processing NFA applications at a standard pace. Insert joke about the ATF, NFA timelines, the $200 ransom and the Constitution here.
All Quiet On The Western Front: TFB Silencer Saturday Series – #2
The weeks leading up to the SHOT Show are always an insane flood of product leaks and announcements; not All Quiet from the western venue. After all, if a company launches a new model or line during the show, it gets lost in a sea of noise. But I was somewhat surprised to hear the news coming out of West Valley, Utah – SilencerCo had removed CEO Josh Waldron and President Jonathan Shultz from their leadership positions within the company. Surprised because two weeks before SHOT is a strange time to voluntarily dominate the news cycle with headlines portraying possible instability. However, even though the timing was awkward, many industry leaders had been expecting a leadership change at the embattled private company for some time.
NFA SITREP: Approval Wait Times Are Dropping
We often talk about the past year and a half inside the world of the National Firearms Act (NFA) as being difficult for manufacturers, distributors and dealers. Not that we need reminding, but proposed legislation as well as the new application processes imposed in mid 2016 have created a bit of turmoil, mostly for the silencer community. But consumers have also been hurt by extraordinarily long wait times, causing many to remain on the sidelines until the backlog clears.
POTD: Homebuilt Hardware Store Bolt Action .357 Mag
AR15.com member ‘Garyd’ recently uploaded a picture of an awesomely unique homemade pistol made from hardware store parts and chambered in .357Mag. The topic came up in a discussion about odd and obscure silencer hosts. The silencer itself is also a home designed and built “Form 1” specimen. Love the engraving.
PSA: Make Sure To Sign Your ATF Forms
After waiting nearly a year and a half for two ATF Form 4s to clear NFA purgatory, the last thing I wanted to hear was that my paperwork had been returned to my dealer with an error letter. Even worse is that I had no one to blame but myself. So as a warning to anyone who is getting ready to submit ATF forms as part of an application to transfer or make NFA items, I am issuing this public safety announcement: don’t forget to f*^%ing sign them.
Simple Elegance: Field Stripping The B&T APC9
The decision to purchase a B&T APC9 was not taken lightly. It is priced at nearly triple the cost of the CZ Scorpion and equal to that of some of the more popular MP5 builds offered to the U.S. market. And yet, for some magical reason I was drawn to the Swiss import pistol caliber carbine (pistol). Besides being unique and having a super sexy silhouette, the APC9 comes ready to suppress with a three lug contoured barrel.
