POTD: Austrian Army – Sturmgewehr 77 A1 MOD (Steyr AUG)
The Photo Of The Day can be chosen for a variety of reasons, and bullpups are always popular. This baby is now 47 years into service, which is quite remarkable in itself. The StG 77 (Sturmgewehr 77) denotes the Austrian Armed Forces’ adoption of the Steyr AUG in 1977.
Austria Begins Issuing Upgraded Steyr AUG Rifles
The iconic Steyr AUG has been in service with Austria’s Bundesheer since 1977, and now the Austrian Ministry of Defense has announced a major upgrade for the rifles. In a statement, Austria’s Defense Minister Klaudia Tanner said that 14,400 modified Sturmgewehr 77 A1 MOD would be issued and that the value of the contract to Steyr Arms was more than 20 million Euros ($21 million).
POTD: It's AUGtober! Steyr AUG A3 SF in The Sound of Earth
For gun nuts, it’s now officially AUGtober! Off to Austria then, to take a look at what’s going on in Lake Traun, or Traunsee, a lake in the Salzkammergut (Salzburg area). The lake has a maximum depth of 191 meters, and it’s a popular tourist destination, with medieval castles and other attractions. In our Photo Of The Day, we see members of the Austrian Jagdkommando combat divers with their Steyr AUG A3 SF rifles. This bullpup is used by Austrian Jagdkommando Special Forces and uses a 3x optic housing, which is lower than normal to make it more comfortable to use the red dot sight on top. The A3 SF version also has additional side rails, scope covers and an external bolt release.

Photo Of The Day: Let’s start with a short history lesson about photojournalism. Advances in technology over one hundred years ago made illustrating news stories with images possible. Illustrated London News was one of the first weekly publications to make use of this wonderful new technology, where the images were printed using engravings. Imagine how modern it must have felt to read such a magazine at the time!
POTD: Steyr AUGs and Drones at the Top of the Tux Alps
Is the summer too hot for you? What about some snow at the Tux Alps at 2500 meters above sea level, in Austria. Here temperature fluctuations of over 30 degrees and wind forces up to 100 km/h are not uncommon. Here we have some scouts with one mission: several days of undetected infiltration and observation of various reconnaissance targets in the high mountains.
POTD: Austrian Jagdkommandos with RBS56 BILL Anti-Tank Missile
The world is full of stories and photographs, and in TFB’s Photo Of The Day you can check these stories every day, every minute, all year round. Today the photographer really nailed it, as we take a closer look at the RBS56 BILL wire-guided anti-tank missile.
POTD: Maschinengewehr 74
The highlight of any training within the military? Shooting fully automatic firearms for sure, as well as blowing things up, and in Today’s Photo, you can see soldiers of the Austrian Bundesheer working their issued Maschinengewehr 74.
