The Firearm Industry Trade Association (NSSF) says Black Friday was a huge day for gun sales again in 2023, and the FBI’s National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) was very busy. The authorities say they performed the largest number of NICS checks ever on a single day. However, the number of background checks over the whole week was behind 2022’s number and also slightly behind the figure for 2021.

Black Friday is always a red-letter day for retailers of virtually every type. So much so that the purchasing event has spawned Cyber Monday, and this has stretched into multi-day sales beginning the week prior, and often running past Cyber Monday as well. The firearms industry is no exception to this phenomenon. According to a November 28th press release from NSSF, the Firearm Industry Trade Association, this year’s instance saw over 5000 more NICS background checks for gun purchases than last year.

Despite having a majority of the country locked up for nearly two years, I still don’t think most of us are really itching to get out and be duking it out with our neighbors over flat-screen TVs or whatever newfangled nuclear-powered air fryer is going to be on sale for this year’s Black Friday. FBI’s NICS recorded 187,585 on Black Friday alone, ranking it among the Top 10 Highest Days for NICS checks.

2020 has been a tornado of a year and as if we haven’t had enough chaos already, Black Friday and Cyber Monday are nearly at our doorstep. Stores all around the country are making announcements that they will in fact be open despite fears surrounding COVID-19. Those who expected the slump in the gun market to extend to the buyingest day in the year will be surprised: Black Friday, November 24 shattered the record for most NICS checks in a single day by over 17,000, reports USA Today. The total? 203,086 background checks processed, up from 185,713 in 2016 and 185,345 in 2015.
