Wheelgun Wednesday: Elmer Keith's No. 5 Colt SAA Revolver

Welcome back to another installment of TFB’s  Wheelgun Wednesday. Today we’ll take a look at a legendary custom Colt Single Action Army target revolver – Elmer Keith’s No. 5. Although Elmer Keith owned a number of revolvers, this particular one is the most well-known Keith wheelgun and is considered by many the best custom SAA to exist. This revolver was featured in Guns & Ammo and The American Rifleman articles as well as in the “Sixguns” book written by Keith. Currently, this wheelgun is consigned to Rock Island Auction Company and will be sold during their  September 2021 Premier Firearms Auction.

Ruger Rolls Out Uncommon Calibers in their GP100 & Redhawk

We are officially less than a month away from SHOT Show now and the new models for 2017 continue to roll in. Ruger recently announced two new caliber offerings in their GP100 and Redhawk line of revolvers. Although it is not uncommon to see revolvers chambered in .44 Special or .357 Magnum nowadays, it is less common in these specific models. The beefier frame of the GP100 plays host to the new .44 Special while the Redhawk downgrades from its typical .44 Magnum caliber to .357 Magnum.

Front Sights Are Overrated: the Charter Arms Boomer

Charter Arms is now offering an even more compact version of the company’s .44 Special line of revolvers. Called the Boomer, this new handgun is a five shot wheel gun – same as the classic Bulldog – but with a tapered 2″ barrel that is ported and completely bereft of a front sight.

Elmer Keith's Revolver No. 5 Up For Auction At James D. Julia

One of the most historically significant items up for auction at James D. Julia this season is Elmer Keith’s famous Single Action Army revolver – the “Number 5”, about which was written in 1929  an article by Keith, titled “The Last Word”. “Number 5” represented what Keith felt was the idea revolver at the time; a .44 Special Single Action Army with features of a standard SAA, a Bisley, and some features invented for the pistol itself.
