Arming the Space Force, the sixth and newest branch of the United States Armed Forces will be an interesting endeavor when it comes to small arms. Naturally, any conventional weapon will be at the Space Force’s disposal while on Earth, but space brings a whole host of issues and challenges when it comes to firing guns in space as I covered in PART 1.

So my first experience was not totally stellar with the RIA 22 TCM. Enough so that they wanted to know if I would be interested (and willing) in getting another one in for review. I was agreeable to that and they sent me a brand new one, still in the plastic wrap.

AUTHOR’S NOTE: While at the range on Monday, the RIA representative I talked to did not point out an important change for the Glock conversion kit. In order for the .22TCM cartridge to fit standard Glock 9mm magazines, the engineers had to shorten the cartridge ever so slightly, hence the 9R designation. I was unaware of that change until Tuesday and apologize for any confusion. Phil was in contact with an RIA representative who couldn’t provide an exact measurement for the shorter casing, but advised that the difference was very minimal – in the thousandths of an inch. The article has been updated to reflect the new information.

My very first pistol was a 1911 Colt Commander. At the time I really had no clue as to what I had bought, or really anything about the platform. I had it until someone talked me into trading it for a Beretta 92FS, which to this day I still regret (though that decision eventually led me to my beloved Glock 17).

Modern Weapon Systems is a Missouri based firm that originally was exclusively involved in dealing firearms. Its Owner, Ian McFarland is a product of the automotive industry and his knowledge of machining and the principles of torque, recoil, and combustion led to him deciding to develop a firearm of his own. I met Ian completely by coincidence at SHOT as we were on the same bus to an event put on by KRISS, and a month ago he gave me a call letting me know about a gun he has designed… which I think is radical.
