Both .17HMR and .22WMR are extremely hot rimfire calibers. The magnum rimfire caliber market is geared specifically towards varmint hunters but there are plenty of plinkers out there who choose one or both just for the fun of shooting them. Today we’ll briefly explore each magnum rimfire cartridge and compare them to see where their strengths and weaknesses are.
SAFETY RECALL: Winchester Recalls Two Lot Numbers Of .17HMR Ammo
Late last week, Winchester announced a product warning and recall for two batches of their .17 HMR ammunition. Winchester stated that loads from these two lots could be missing powder. The primer alone may have enough force to get the bullet into the barrel, but not enough to make it exit. This could cause a catastrophic failure if a normally charged cartridge were used with the barrel obstructed. Olin Winchester’s full press release is posted below:
[SHOT 2018] Tikka Introduces T1x Rimfire Precision Rifle
At the 2018 SHOT Show Industry Day at the Range, Tikka brought out a surprising new product: The company’s first rimfire bolt action rifle. The T1x, as it’s called, is based in part on the successful T3 and T3x centerfire rifles, but with a redesigned action suited for rimfire operation. The result is a svelte little rimfire that was one of the most fun guns to shoot at the 2018 Industry Day.

Sturm, Ruger & Co. announced a new version of the American Rimfire rifle. Called the American Rimfire Stainless, the new bolt action gun features several changes including a satin stainless finish.
Operative B 17 HMR Nighthunter Rifle from Thompson Machine
Thompson Machine is now offering an integrally suppressed 17 HMR rifle based on the Savage 93R. The Savage 93R is a bolt action rifle that comes in a variety of styles. One such variant comes with a threaded barrel. However, Thompson Machine decided to go with integral suppression for a lower profile and shorter overall appearance.
