Wheelgun Wednesday: Cartridge Spotlight – .17 Caliber Revolvers
Welcome to TFB’s Wheelgun Wednesday, where we explore all that revolves around revolvers. This week, we’ll take a look at .17 caliber revolvers to kick off a gradual series based on our previous 57 Revolver Cartridges article, using it as an overview. In this new Revolver Cartridge Spotlight series, we’ll spotlight each caliber currently chambered in revolvers, the available revolvers that shoot said cartridge, and some pros and cons about them. Without further ado, let’s start off the Revolver Cartridge Spotlight with .17 caliber revolvers.
Volquartsen's New 22 WMR and 17 HMR VF-ORYX Rifles
Volquartsen Firearms is expanding upon its already extensive list of premium rimfire firearms with the introduction of two new rifles in the VF-ORYX series. Two new offerings in 17 HRM and 22 WMR will now be made available with all of the same premium features offered on the VF-ORYX 22LR versions but will now give rimfire shooters access to longer engagement distances with ammo that is ideal for long-range shooters and varmint hunters.
Bear Creek Arsenal's New BC-15 17HMR Billet Upper Receiver
The .17HMR is one of my favorite rimfire calibers. The hot 17 caliber rimfire cartridge is both supremely accurate, and light recoiling making it a good step up from .22LR in terms of both inherent accuracy and range. Bear Creek Arsenal is following up the success of their .22WMR AR-15 upper with the release of the new BC-15 17HMR Billet Upper Receiver to give rimfire enthusiasts access to yet another popular rimfire cartridge that they can plink, hunt, or target shoot with by simply slapping it on an AR-15 lower receiver.
New ENV-HMR 17 HMR Pistol from Volquartsen
Volquartsen Firearms has just announced the expansion of their semi-automatic rimfire pistol line with the introduction of the new ENV-HMR pistol chambered in 17 HMR. The success of the 22LR ENV showed Volquartsen and its customers the clear benefits of the platform and now Volquartsen is further expanding on that capability with a hotter, flatter shooting cartridge maintaining all the great features found on the 22LR version of the pistol.
The Rimfire Report: Rimfire Reliability – Is it Really That Bad?
Hello and welcome back to another edition of The Rimfire Report! This ongoing series is all about the rimfire firearm world! Last week we took a look at the practical application of .22WMR and whether or not it would make for a suitable stand-in as a self-defense cartridge. Although .22WMR is magnitudes more powerful than even the hottest of .22LR cartridges, many of you held the same sentiment towards it as you do .22LR – it’s just not powerful enough or reliable enough to feel comfortable carrying when you have other options available to you. The last part of that reasoning caught my attention as I’ve actually never had a failure to fire that I can remember when using .22WMR. So today I wanted to take a closer look at the reliability of various rimfire cartridges based on my experiences, and the experiences of others, to ascertain whether the infamous rimfire reliability gun lore is actually that bad.
The Rimfire Report: Hang Loose with the Rimfire Ma Deuce
Hello and welcome back to another edition of The Rimfire Report! This ongoing series is all about rimfire firearms, ammunition, practices, and trends. This week we’ll be taking a look at a piece of rimfire belt-fed goodness in the form of a rimfire Ma Deuce or M2. No matter how you take it, belt-fed guns are just somehow more fun. I don’t know if it is just the mechanical complexity behind them or the whole operation of the firearm but I know that anytime I get a chance to shoot a belt-fed, I’ll immediately take it.
The Rimfire Report: 3 Great Rimfire Takedown Guns
Hello and welcome back to another edition of The Rimfire Report! This weekly series is all about rimfire firearms and their various related topics. This week we’re talking about rimfire takedown firearms and some of the best ones I’ve seen throughout the years. Takedown firearms are great tools to have on hand for hiking, backpacking, camping, or even just adventuring in any location. The ability to collapse an otherwise almost 3-foot long firearm by half of its own length is a very convenient and efficient way to transport a non-combat ready firearm. So today we’ll be taking a look at 3 great rimfire takedown guns I think are some of the best in the industry.
The Rimfire Report: My Rimfire Hopes for 2021 and Beyond
Hello and welcome back to another edition of The Rimfire Report! This weekly series is all about the rimfire firearm world. SHOT Show 2020 was a blast for all firearms enthusiasts but I feel like rimfire junkies got their fair share of awesome releases too with guns like the Ruger LCP II Lite Rack and the Glock 44 that made their dent in the rimfire semi-auto pistol world around the start of the year. This week we’re going to go over a few of my hopes for the future of the rimfire world as we reach the time where companies start to make big announcements about their upcoming or soon to be released firearms. So what are my hopes for rimfire in 2021?
Hawke Optics Adds Three New Rimfire Scopes to Vantage 30 WA Line
Ammo prices. Am I right? So, what to do? Many shooters have turned to the old, trusty cost-saver, .22 Long Rifle. This, mixed with the increasing popularity of precision rifle competition, means we need optics. Hawke Optics is happy to oblige, and have added three new rimfire scopes to the Vantage 30 WA line.
The Rimfire Report: A Brief History of Rimfire Ammunition

So let’s take a look at some of the most iconic and important rimfire ammunition throughout history.
Wheelgun Wednesday: Taurus M17 Tracker .17 HMR Review
It is Wednesday again and if you are in search of wheelguns you have come to the right place! Last week we took a look at the rather thunderous Raging Hunter .44 Magnum from Taurus so this week we are going to go in a completely different direction, and check out something that is a near polar opposite as far as caliber goes. Our latest trip to the gun range involved the Taurus M17 Tracker .17 HMR (Hornady Magnum Rimfire) for some zippy, rimfire fun. Not many companies chamber the .17 HMR cartridge in a revolver anymore so we wanted to see what the M17 Tracker was all about and how it stacks up with other revolvers from Taurus and similar ones in the firearm industry as a whole. Let’s dive in and review the Taurus M17 Tracker .17 HMR!
