POTD: Finland's Assault Rifle RK 62M
The hungriest beast of them all on this blog is our Photo Of The Day. It consumes hundreds of images every month, and it has been doing so for over 8 years. In a series of articles, we’ll be going through some of the firearms used by the Finnish Army. We’re going to begin with their Assault Rifle RK 62M.
POTD: Oglaigh na hEireann in U.S. Army International Sniper Competition
In today’s Photo Of The Day, we see an Irish Defence Forces sniper team in action at the U.S. Army International Sniper Competition in Fort Benning, Georgia earlier this year. The firearm is a Remington Sniper Rifle, probably borrowed by the hosts, with a Leupold riflescope.
POTD: F88 Austeyr in Australian Army
Photo Of The Day – We take a look at the Australian F88 Austeyr, the Austrian Steyr AUG STG-77 lookalike. The pictures are from the 2020 Army Skill at Arms Meeting Champion Shot, a competition to test the skills of shooters through realistic and challenging scenarios. We see an Australian Army soldier from the 2nd Cavalry Regiment as he takes a sight picture during the moving target serial. Note how compact the F88 is despite its 16″ barrel.

The world is full of stories and photographs, and in TFB’s Photo Of The Day, you can check these stories every day, every minute, all year round. Get to know a subject better or get inspiration. Today we have photographs from the British Army. Above you see a sniper from the 3rd Battalion, The Parachute Regiment, conducting training with a Kuwaiti Land Forces sniper, from a rooftop.

POTD: Spanish Heckler & Koch G36
Photo Of The Day – Established in 2014 this is TFB’s way to show carefully selected photographs on a daily basis. As a bonus, you get a short story and hopefully, you’ll learn or see something new. Today the Heckler & Koch G36, a standard-issue rifle for the Spanish Army, is on offer. Note that these rifles do not have a red dot mounted. The pictures are from Camp Ādaži in Latvia, very close to the capital Riga.

Illustrated London News was one of the first weekly publications to make use of this wonderful new technology, where the images were printed using engravings. Imagine how modern it must have felt to read such a magazine at the time!

Another Photo Of The Day and we have snipers of the Royal Danish Army fire at targets from an uneven platform during the Latvia International Snipers Competition. This was part of Defender Europe at Forward Operating Site Adazi, Latvia, on May 13, 2022.
POTD: Finnish Army – These Boots Are Made for Walkin'
Photo Of The Day: What’s life in the military like? Well, the Finnish Army picture above is a great example of things that can happen. We can hear Nancy Sinatra’s – These Boots Are Made for Walkin’ in the background. The rifle looks like an RK 62 M2, with an Ase Utra BoreLock flash hider and a front handguard with an M-LOK rail interface. The red dot is from Aimpoint.
POTD: Defence Forces International Sniper Competition 2022
Photo Of The Day and we have images from Óglaigh na hÉireann or Irish Defence Forces. These pictures are from the Defence Forces International Sniper Competition 2022. For sniping, they use the Accuracy International 92 (AI AW) and the Accuracy International AWM. The riflescope looks very much like a Schmidt & Bender, or do you have other ideas?
POTD: M110 and M2010 Sniper Rifles in Eastern Europe
As usual, we have selected some pictures for you today. By this time you know it, it’s TFB’s Photo Of The Day to keep you in a good mood. Get a coffee, or some water, take a break and enjoy a few minutes off whatever you were doing and take a look at U.S. soldiers assigned to the 1st Battalion, 8th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Armored Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division. They’re using their M110 semi-automatic sniper systems as part of the zeroing step before the Defender 2022 exercise at Oberlausitz Training Area, Germany. This happened in April 2022.
POTD: CZ 75 TOBRUK Auctioned for Over $200,000
Photo Of The Day: Recently, according to a communication from CZ, a CZ 75 TOBRUK pistol raised CZK 5 million – about 220,000 USD – in a charity auction for Ukraine. A limited-edition CZ 75 TOBRUK pistol was sold for CZK 5 million at an evening auction organized by Forbes and the Freedom for Ukraine Initiative. In total, the auction brought in CZK 27.8 million ($1.2 million).
POTD: Rekon Tripod System – Shoot Standing, Seated, Prone
Photo Of The Day brings a collage of photos from Scott Country International. Apart from supplying night vision and thermal imaging products in the United Kingdom they also sell the Rekon Tripod System.
Did you ever try shooting with a tripod? As you can see, there are plenty of possibilities to shoot from all sorts of positions, it’s not just as easy as you imagine by looking at images.
POTD: Afghan Soldiers with PSL Rifles
In our Photo Of The Day, we see an Afghan soldier providing overwatch security with a Romanian PSL rifle on an observation post while U.S. and Afghan soldiers observe rounds fired from Afghan artillery. These pictures are from 2012, almost 10 years ago. The bottom image is even older.
POTD: Get Some! Tail Gunnery Shoot in South China Sea
Imagine loading your M2 Browning .50 caliber heavy machine gun, as you hear the rotors of the heavy CH-53E Super Stallion helicopter increase in intensity as you take off above the South China Sea. You’re the door gunner! Sometimes it might be worth getting enlisted after all?
POTD: Bilateral Breach and Clear Native Fury 20
Roy Batty from Blade Runner said: “I’ve seen things you people wouldn’t believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhauser gate. All those moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain…” ( Source) But have you seen breaching like this? In our Photo Of The Day, we have U.S. Marines with the 1st Combat Engineer Battalion and a United Arab Emirates (UAE) Armed Forces soldier showing how to breach in an urban environment during the Native Fury 20 exercise.
POTD: The Browning M2 Minigun?
Photo Of The Day: Once upon a time we used to run a mini-series called Minigun Monday. Well, this one isn’t a Minigun and never made it to our series, but it’s easy to get fooled. Upon closer look, it is a Browning M2 .50 BMG Heavy Machine Gun with a blank firing adapter mounted.
POTD: M1A2 Abrams Tank – Live-Fire in Bulgaria
Every day TFB brings you a bunch of fantastic photos that you most likely never would have seen elsewhere. Today’s Photo Of The Day is an M1A2 Abrams tank firing at a live-fire exercise in Bulgaria. The photo is taken by Sgt. Alan Brutus, USA, and I wonder how he pulled this photo off? Any ideas?
POTD: FAMAS & HK416F by 35e Regiment d'Infanterie
Ever since photography was invented in the early 1800s, it has been a medium of limitless possibilities. Today most people have at least a smartphone to capture what’s going on around, and the professionals use even more advanced cameras and optics. At TFB we’ve been running our Photo Of The Day for years, where we share the best photos with firearms. Today we’re looking at images from the 35e régiment d’infanterie in France. The images are from Operation Sentinel in Dijon, France. We see a combination of the soon-to-be-phased-out bullpup FAMAS and the new Heckler & Koch HK416F as the soldier patrol the streets.
POTD: CZ Bren in NATO enhanced Forward Presence Battle Group Latvia
Photo Of The Day, with pictures of the CZ Bren from the sky as well as the ground. The pictures are from the NATO enhanced Forward Presence Battle Group Latvia where the Czech Republic contingent prepared for a two-day small arms shooting competition for the Battle Group. Soldiers from all nations at Camp Adazi participated to compete and compare shooting skills. Day one included a pistol stage and day two the rifle stage we see here.
POTD: U.S. Marines in Japan – FARP
Location: Okinawa, Japan. TFB’s Photo Of The Day has become an impressive gallery, with an ever-growing number of images of firearms in all sorts of environments. Today we’re going to add a few more, just look at that beautiful machine gun above. Machine guns are all fun until it’s time to clean them, or if you have some strange malfunction. In these pictures we see U.S. Marines with the 2d Battalion, 3d Marines, providing security during a forward arming and refueling point (FARP) operations on Ie Shima, Okinawa, Japan. This happened in October last year. The Marine Wing Support Squadron 172, 1st Marine Aircraft Wing, established a FARP on an airfield secured by 2d Battalion, 3d Marines to support sustained aviation operations.
POTD: Polish Mechanized Brigade – Fire, Flames and Smoke
Each day a different image from the world of firearms. We call this POTD, short for Photo Of The Day, and it is our daily article series where we go to great lengths trying to find the most interesting pictures for you out there. There’s a lot of fire, flames and smoke in today’s pictures as we visit Poland and the Giżycka Brygada Zmechanizowana (Mechanized Brigade). Poland uses the Russian T-72 Main Battle Tanks. After extensive upgrades, they are called PT-91 Twardy. The main armament is a 125 mm gun, with a 7.62mm PKT general-purpose machine gun on the same axis. As you can see, they like smoke too.
POTD: U.S. Soldiers with Syrian Defense Forces
Photo Of The Day and we have something that has gone Ka-Boom further down in the desert. We’re visiting the Syrian Defense Forces (SDF) as they conduct a live-fire exercise alongside U.S Soldiers in Syria. According to the caption, live-fire exercises like this provide the Syrian Democratic Forces and Coalition partners with the opportunity to simulate combat realism in a controlled environment.
POTD: Estonian Special Forces with HK416 and NVG
Our Photo Of The Day article series brings together some of the most eye-catching and visually appealing images. You won’t find a lot of pictures of sunsets, flowers or touristic landmarks here, instead the photo selection spans from soldiering, firearms and special units. Today we get a quick glimpse at the Estonian Special Forces and their equipment.

It’s time for another Photo Of The Day and this time we follow the Recon U.S. Marines to Iceland. According to the experts, some of the soldiers are armed with rifles with M27 lowers and HK416A5 uppers. Presumably, this is a new program for Recon.

Great photos can spread like wildfire, but the story and the necessary context sometimes gets left behind.
