POTD: U.S. Marines with the 12.7108mm NSV Machine Gun
The hungriest beast of them all on this blog is our Photo Of The Day. It consumes hundreds of images every month, and it has been doing so for over 8 years. Today we have one of the coolest pictures for a while, just look at that NSV machine gun hammering those 12.7×108 mm rounds. In Finland, it’s called the 12.7 ITKK 96. Task Force Red Cloud, headquartered by elements of CLB-6, has recently been deployed in Finland to support the Exercises SYD 2022 and Freezing Winds 2022.
POTD: Beretta AR-70/233 Sport
Photo Of The Day: If you happen to own a Beretta AR-70/233 Sport, you surely know you’re one of the very few people who have one as it was produced in very low numbers and imported to the U.S. in even lower quantities.
POTD: M4 Range Day in South Korea
Every day, all year round, we at TFB publish at least one photo together with an explanation about what’s going on. We’ve been doing this for a very long time, almost 10 years. We call it Photo Of The Day and today we visit Camp Yongsan-Casey, the United States Army Garrison in South Korea.
POTD: Carl Gustaf M4 Anti-Tank Recoilless Rifle in Baltic Striker 22
TFB’s Photo Of The Day is here again. Every day we present our readers with at least one photo. The subject is always a firearm of some kind, preferably with a muzzle flash or some action around it. Above you see a Swedish soldier with an 84 mm Carl-Gustaf recoilless rifle (8,4 cm Granatgevär M/86) firing a smoke grenade in order to mark targets in the terrain. The photo was taken during Baltic Striker 22 exercise.
POTD: Romeo and Juliet
This story of Juliet and her Romeo is not a one of woe at all. The Romeo and Juliet of today’s Photo Of The Day bring joy to people behind them and their union allows them to do things that neither could do separately – a perfect relationship, isn’t it?
POTD: Winter Is Coming…
Photo Of The Day: We see U.S. Marines patrol through strong winds and heavy snow during a comprehensive bilateral field training exercise. This was part of Exercise Forest Light 13-3 at the Hokkaido-Dai Maneuver Area in Hokkaido prefecture, Japan. The FTX began with the Marines and the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force (JGSDF) patrolling separately on foot and with mechanized vehicles to reach an area where they set up a defensive position.
POTD: Cabo Verde Joint Combined Exchange Training – U.S. Army Rangers
Photo Of The Day and we’re off to the Republic of Cabo Verde, an archipelago and island country in the central Atlantic Ocean consisting of ten volcanic islands. In these images, U.S. Army Rangers assigned to the 3rd Special Forces Group teach the Cabo Verdean National Guard tactical movements, although the Rangers themselves are not visible.
POTD: U.S. Marines on The Island of Gotland
Photo Of The Day and we are off to an island called Gotland. This is Sweden’s largest island, and its location in the center of the Baltic Sea gives it great strategic importance, especially in times like these.
POTD: Defender & Trail
Today’s Photo Of The Day is from Česká zbrojovka and depicts their recently-released CZ 600 Trail bolt-action rifle on the now-discontinued Land Rover Defender off-road vehicle. These two workhorses are similar in many ways despite one being very young and the other being already retired. The caption of this picture which was posted on CZ’s social media pages reads: “If the word “practical” should be described with a picture it could look like this“.
POTD: Taking The Shot
A great photo is often produced by being at the right time and place and using the perfect exposure. Today the photographer really managed to capture the moment, with U.S. Marines in training. If TFB’s Photo Of The Day came with sound, you could almost certainly hear the sound of yelling from the battlefield, and shots fired from the H&Ks.
POTD: Australian Special Operations Engineer Regiment
Photo Of The Day: Being an engineer in the Army sounds boring, doesn’t it? Well, perhaps not if you join the Special Operations Engineer Regiment in Australia. These engineers look pretty Special Ops if you ask me.
POTD: Type 81 SR
In today’s Photo Of The Day, we have a rather interesting Chinese rifle imported to Canada by Tactical Imports Corporation. This SVD/PSL lookalike called Type 81 SR is based on the Type 81 rifle which has a hybrid design that merges the Type 56 (Chinese AK-47 variant) and Type 63 (Chinese rifle based on the SKS) rifle designs. The Type 81 SR is chambered in 7.62x39mm and like the Iraqi Tabuk, tries to push this intermediate cartridge into the DMRosphere.
POTD: U.S. Marines in Afghanistan (2009)
Photo Of The Day and we’re back in Afghanistan, towards the end of 2009. Above you see U.S. Marine Sgt. John Hollingsworth, where he is zeroing his weapon at the shooting range in Forward Operation Base Airborne, Afghanistan.
POTD: Italian Paratroopers with SCP70 Rifles
Meravigliosamente! In our Photo Of The Day, we have a wonderful flash from an Italian SCP70 rifle. The soldiers are Italians of the 183rd Airborne Regiment, and they’re using their SCP70 rifles to fire blanks at enemy combatants during a decisive action training environment exercise. The images were taken a while ago, during Saber Junction 2012, at the Joint Multinational Readiness Center in Hohenfels, Germany.
POTD: Special Forces at Melrose Air Force Range
Photo Of The Day: Photojournalism is the process of storytelling using the medium of photography as your main storytelling device. While a journalist will use their pen and paper to tell stories, a photojournalist will use their camera to capture the visual representation of a story. Above you see a special forces unit member as he provides coverage during an exercise at Melrose Air Force Range, N.M. This happened ten years ago, in 2012, but some photos age well. The range is one of Air Force Special Operations Command’s premier training facilities and is utilized by multiple agencies and branches of the armed forces.
POTD: The Ruger Mk IV Tactical – "Space Blaster"
One of the goals of TFB’s Photo Of The Day is to find and push the excellent work done by photographers around the world and in the firearms industry. See it as a “thank you” to those who go in harm’s way trying to capture various special moments for us, but also – like today – those who stay in the studio working out the perfect lighting and setting hour after hour. Armed with skills, cameras and sometimes a fair bit of editing here is where their hard work ends up. Today we’re going to have a closer look at a picture by Holt Works Photography. In the picture above you can see the Mk IV Tactical “Space Blaster”. Could this be the U.S. Space Force’s next big thing?
POTD: Strike Industries – P365 with ACRO
Photo Of The Day: Some say that the Aimpoint ACRO looks like a miniature toaster, but it did rather well in TFB’s review back in 2021. Did you ever try to attach an ACRO to a handgun like the SIG Sauer P365? If you did, I assume you improved your hit probability by quite a margin, especially at longer distances?
POTD: The M249 Light Machine Gun
The number of internet users worldwide will soon reach the 5-billion mark. Our world has never been so connected. Great photos can spread like wildfire, but the story and the necessary context sometimes gets left behind. TFB’s Photo Of The Day, we will always accompany the images with a background and credits to the photographer. Above you can see U.S. Army Spc. Ladarion Banks as he fires blank ammunition from an M249 light machine gun during squad-level training at the Grafenwoehr Training Area in Germany. This happened in February 2013.
POTD: U.S. Marine Corps – Range 400 at Marine Air Ground Combat Center
Above you see U.S. Marine Corps Lance Cpl. Austin Dziubinski, a native of Port Huron, Michigan and an infantry rifleman with 3rd Battalion, 8th Marine Regiment (V38), 2d Marine Division. The location is the shooting range 400 at Marine Air Ground Combat Center Twentynine Palms, California. The pictures are from 2020. Range 400 is a company-size attack range meant to produce combat-ready forces capable of performing combined arms assaults in combat.
POTD: Australian Army SOF – 1st Commando Regiment
Looking for moments when a great photographer meets Special Forces and their firearms? Look no further, TFB’s daily article series – Photo Of The Day – is where you will find these amazing masterpieces. The photo above is an exceptional catch, where Australian Army special operations force soldiers from the 1st Commando Regiment rendezvous in a wheat field near the You Yangs, north of Geelong.
POTD: Latvian Army – H&K G36s in Basic Military Training
With the current situation, things must be rather tense in the Latvian Army, and today we get a look at the second basic military training course for reservists. They’re using the Heckler & Koch G36, without any optics. Typically Latvia uses the G36V which lacks the integrated reflector sight.
POTD: Romanian Soldier with Pusca Automata Model 1965
To the best of my knowledge, the rifle in today’s Photo Of The Day is a Pușcă Automată model 1965 (Automatic Rifle Model 1965 chambered in 7.62×39mm. It’s made by Romarm National Company / Cugir Arms Factory, established in 1799. If you know better, you’re welcome to correct my error in the comments below.
POTD: French Navy Soldier with F88 Austeyr
Have you taken your vitamins today? As you know vitamins have several important functions for your body. Some say they are almost as important as a daily dose of TFB’s Photo Of The Day, and we agree of course. Today we’re looking at a really happy French Navy sailor with an F88 Austeyr on the Starboard bridge wing of HMAS Perth, during a cross-deck as part of Exercise Kakadu 2022 (KA22). I’ve never seen this kind of paint on an F88 before, have you?
POTD: Spotter ready? Shooter ready? Steyr Mannlicher SSG M1
In the Spring of 2018, TFB reported about the new modular Steyr Mannlicher SSG M1 rifle. Today we have two good-looking photos of it in action, with the spotter sitting beside the shooter. The riflescope is made by Steiner Optics.
POTD: Indonesian National Armed Forces with U.S. Marines
Photo Of The Day – Every day we present our readers with at least one photo. The subject is always a firearm of some kind, preferably with a muzzle flash or some action around it. But we’re happy with a perfectly edited still life photo as well. Today we have U.S. Marines and Sailors with the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit Maritime Raid Force. They have just landed on the beach during an amphibious raid on Singkep Island, which is an island in the Lingga Archipelago in Indonesia. The joint exercise between the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI) and the U.S. Indo-Pacific Command is called Super Garuda Shield 22.
POTD: Golf Company M16A4 Rifles
Photo Of The Day: If you’ve been in the Army, you know all about this. The first time you got issued your rifle. Here you can see recruits of the Golf Company getting their M16A4 service rifles for the first time. I’m sure they’re excited (perhaps).
POTD: It's AUGtober! Steyr AUG A3 SF in The Sound of Earth
For gun nuts, it’s now officially AUGtober! Off to Austria then, to take a look at what’s going on in Lake Traun, or Traunsee, a lake in the Salzkammergut (Salzburg area). The lake has a maximum depth of 191 meters, and it’s a popular tourist destination, with medieval castles and other attractions. In our Photo Of The Day, we see members of the Austrian Jagdkommando combat divers with their Steyr AUG A3 SF rifles. This bullpup is used by Austrian Jagdkommando Special Forces and uses a 3x optic housing, which is lower than normal to make it more comfortable to use the red dot sight on top. The A3 SF version also has additional side rails, scope covers and an external bolt release.
POTD: Remington MSR (Modular Sniper Rifle) in Afghanistan (2013)
TFB’s Photo Of The Day. We go back in time, to Afghanistan in 2013. Above we see Spc. Daniel S. Kennedy, from Tuttle, Oklahoma, with 2nd Battalion, 23rd Infantry Regiment, as he provides security as Afghan Border Police (ABP) break ground on a new checkpoint, in the Spin Boldak district, Kandahar province, Afghanistan. The ABP moved to the new location to block an insurgent infiltration route. He’s using the Remington MSR bolt-action rifle. The MSR came out as a winner in the USSOCOM Precision Sniper Rifle competition but was later excluded due to non-compliance.
POTD: M27 Live-Fire at Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune
The world is hungry for visual storytelling, and TFB’s Photo Of The Day does its best to keep the feed alive. Today we have live-fire on the menu, from the shooting range at Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, earlier this year.
POTD: Brazilian & Ecuadorian Marines in Itaoca, Brazil
Photo Of The Day and we have probably the first images (on TFB) of Brazilian & Ecuadorian Marines. Above you see a Brazilian Marine providing security during an amphibious landing. This happened during an exercise called UNITAS LXIII in Itaoca, Brazil.
