POTD: The M500 Shotgun on Nimitz Carrier Strike Group

Photo Of The Day and we have the M500 Shotgun on the flight deck of the Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer USS Paul Hamilton (DDG 60), during a visit, board, search, and seizure (VBSS) gun shoot. The Paul Hamilton is part of the Nimitz Carrier Strike Group, in the U.S. 7th Fleet conducting routine operations. 7th Fleet is the U.S. Navy’s largest forward-deployed numbered fleet, and routinely interacts and operates with Allies and partners. The ship is named after Paul Hamilton, who was the third Secretary of the Navy and served in that role from 1809 to 1813.

Cinematic Arms caught the moment with this AR-180. The Armalite Costa Mesa AR-180 is a semi-automatic rifle that was produced by the Armalite company. It was introduced in the late 1960s as a civilian version of the AR-18, a rifle that was designed for military use. The AR-180 has a distinctive look with its curved stock and pistol grip. The AR-180 uses a short-stroke gas piston system.

POTD: Unsuppressed SIG Sauer XM-7 Rifle with the XM-157 Fire Control

What a fantastic time to be alive! Here we are again with our Photo Of The Day, which seems to be from the future, but from a future that exists already today. Above we have a rare sight. We see a soldier firing an unsuppressed XM-7 Rifle with the XM-157 Fire Control. The fact that the rifle does not have a suppressor is unusual. The photo is from a controllability trial of the Next Generation Squad Weapons (NGSW), and the soldier is shooting from the standing unsupported firing position. The location is the Aberdeen Proving Ground, MD in November 2022.

One of the purposes of TFB’s Photo Of The Day is to broaden the audience for the excellent work done by combat photographers around the world. Today we’re somewhere in the Indian Ocean, where Lance Cpl. Sergio Escalante, rifleman, 2nd Battalion, 4th Marines, 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU), stands an armed watch during a straits transit. He’s working aboard the amphibious assault ship USS Makin Island (LHD 8). The USS Makin Island is a Wasp-class amphibious assault ship. Its main task is to embark, deploy, and land elements of a Marine Corps landing force in case of an amphibious assault by helicopters, landing craft, and amphibious vehicles.

POTD: Setting Up A New Beretta M9A4 RDO

TFB reader Stephan reached out to me recently about the best way to set up his new Beretta M9A4 RDO (Red Dot Optic-Ready) with a red dot. People’s first foray into the red dot optic market can be a daunting thing between deciding which red dot to go with, which footprint said red dot has, and obtaining the right plate if none is supplied with the pistol. In Stephan’s case of the Beretta RDO series, Beretta’s fine print stated that upon registering a new purchase with the company, they will send the owner one free optics mounting plate, while any additionally desired plates cost $29.
