POTD: M110 SASS and M110A1 CSASS in Emergency Deployment Readiness Exercise
Photo Of The Day and this is the first time we have the M110 SASS and the M110A1 CSASS side by side here at TFB. We see soldiers from the Washington Army National Guard’s 3-161 Infantry Regiment on the range during an Emergency Deployment Readiness Exercise or EDRE, which is aimed to test the ability of a unit to receive an emergency alert and mobilize to respond to any kind of domestic emergency throughout the area.

TFB’s Photo Of The Day is here again, and today we’re going to let Artificial Intelligence do some of the work. Above you see a U.S. Marine Corps engineer equipment mechanic with the 2d Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion, 2d Marine Division, fire an M4 carbine. This happened during a training exercise with the Marine Corps Shooting Team’s Mobile Training Team on Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, on March 2, 2023. The Mobile Training Team provides unique additional training for Marines in preparation for the Marine Corps Marksmanship Competition. It’s nice to see a soldier with decent hearing protection.

We’re always on the lookout for the best firearms-related images out there, with the goal to give your eyes something worth watching every day. Today we have pictures of paratroopers. Above you see an AA Paratrooper assigned to the 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division, pulling security at a checkpoint during exercise Panther Giant on Fort Bragg, North Carolina, March 8th, 2023. The Exercise Panther Giant was a validation exercise for elements of the 3rd Brigade Combat Team to demonstrate readiness and lethality before attending the Joint Readiness Training Center (JRTC).

Today we’re looking at German Spezialeinsatzkommandos (SEK) moving under simulated fire during SEK training. The location is the Joint Multinational Readiness Center (JMRC) near Hohenfels, Germany. SEK specialize in riot control, hostage negotiations, rescue missions, and fighting terrorism.

Photo Of The Day – have you ever tried shooting like this? If you’re one of TFB’s readers, you probably own at least 20 firearms, but no skis? We’re in Finland (where else?) where a soldier from Charlie Troop, 3-71 Cavalry Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division, practices the kneeling firing position holding a 7.62mm RK62 assault rifle while kneeling on skis.
POTD: Semi-Autonomous Canine at Cape Cod Space Force Station
TFB’s Photo Of The Day cares about pets. In fact, any pets. Here’s the unmanned ground vehicle in the form of a semi-autonomous “dog” at the Cape Cod Space Force Station. This pet named “Spot”, is there to enhance the base security protocols. It doesn’t look like it’s armed, but the guards surely are.
POTD: Red Dawn! Pre-ban Finnish Valmet M78 RPK
Photo Of The Day: The machine gun that was never adopted. The Finnish Valmet M78 light machine gun has a standard RPK-style clubfoot buttstock and either a wooden or black synthetic forearm. It has sometimes been used in movies in place of the original RPK. This one comes from the collection of Dominion Defense LLC.

Photo Of The Day: The silhouette of this Steyr AUG almost looks like an airsoft rifle. We’re in Daboya, Ghana, in Africa, and it looks rather hot outside – even without fur. The image portrays an Austrian dog handler, working with Ghanaian soldiers during an objective raid.
POTD: Patrolling the Gulf of Tadjoura
Photo Of The Day and everyone will get their share of the American Flag in these images. We’re located in the Port of Djibouti, with the U.S. Maritime Expeditionary Security Squadron Eleven (MSRON-1. The Gulf of Tadjoura is a body of water located in the Horn of Africa, between the countries of Djibouti and Somalia. It is an extension of the Indian Ocean and is connected to the Red Sea through the Bab-el-Mandeb strait. The gulf is approximately 120 kilometers long and 20 to 30 kilometers wide, with a maximum depth of about 300 meters.

POTD: Nigerian Forces in Tactical Boat Boarding
Welcome once again to our Photo Of The Day! We are in Accra, Ghana, and the Volta region located in the eastern part of Ghana, bordering Togo to the east. The region is named after the Volta River, which runs through it and is one of the largest rivers in West Africa. Above you see a short-barreled IWI Tavor carried by a Nigerian Navy Special Boat Service soldier, as he climbs a ladder while clearing a boat. I’m sure a bullpup is quite appreciated during this kind of exercise.

Flintlock provides an opportunity, along with other U.S. military-hosted events, for African nations to share their strategies and best practices to accelerate the collective ability to adapt and overcome the terrorist threat.
POTD: Mauritanian Armed Forces conduct Dynamic Shooting Drills
Photo Of The Day: The Mauritanian Armed Forces are the military forces of the Islamic Republic of Mauritania. The Mauritanian Armed Forces are composed of the Army, Navy, Air Force, and National Gendarmerie, and they are responsible for defending Mauritania’s borders and protecting its people. Here we see them conducting Dynamic Shooting Drills, in a pretty cool picture with their red berets. In terms of small arms, they use a mixture of AK-47, AKM and the Chinese Type 56.

Photo Of The Day – A Marine assigned to the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU) fires an M4A1 carbine during in a live-fire small arms exercise in the hangar bay of the forward-deployed amphibious assault carrier USS America (LHA 6), in the Philippine Sea. USS America is a multi-purpose amphibious assault ship of the United States Navy. The ship was commissioned in 2014 and is the fourth ship to bear the name. The USS America is the lead ship of her class, which is designed to be more versatile and flexible than previous amphibious assault ships.

Today we offer a bunch of images from the Al Asad Air Base, in Iraq. This military airbase is located in the western Iraqi province of Al Anbar. It is situated approximately 180 kilometers west of the capital city of Baghdad and 10 kilometers south of the town of Baghdadi. The airbase is named after the nearby town of Al Asad.

One of the benefits of our Photo Of The Day is that you can travel the world without a sweat. Today we’re in Curaçao, an island in the southern Caribbean Sea, located off the coast of Venezuela. You see a beach reconnaissance team member from the Royal Netherlands Marine Corps, as he helps secure a beach during a demonstration for sailors from Riverine Squadron.
POTD: U.S. Soldier with Finnish RK62M1 Rifle
Photo Of The Day: Finnish Lapland, some 130 kilometers (81 miles) north of the Arctic Circle, and we’re visiting the Sodankylä Garrison, in the middle of winter 2023. Above you see a U.S. Army cavalry scout assigned to the 2nd Squadron, 183rd Cavalry Regiment, Virginia Army National Guard. He’s aiming at a target with a Finnish RK62M1 rifle during a foreign weapon familiarization training at Arctic Forge 2023. The red dot is from Aimpoint (dated 2016), and the receiver is stamped with “Valmet” and “1971” – but apparently still going strong! I don’t work for either of those companies, but that seems like a pretty strong sign of quality.
