Silencer Shop: The Beginner's Guide To Silencers (aka Suppressors)

About a decade ago I discovered a ‘cheat code’ for my love of shooting firearms – silencers. With the right suppressor, the right host (gun), and the right ammunition, the enjoyment of shooting is elevated to the next level. So, after many years, about 200 silencers, and hundreds of thousands of rounds on target, it wasn’t a surprise that Silencer Shop asked me to share this ‘cheat code’ in the form of a beginner’s guide to silencers. If you are new to the world of quieter shooting, or you could use a refresher on the process, stick around while we discuss the basics of buying, transferring, and using suppressors.

TFB REVIEW: The Trijicon RMR HD Red Dot Sight

I have carried a GLOCK 45 MOS every day for over a year in an inside the waistband holster. Equipped with a Surefire 300 Ultra and a Trijicon RMR, this is my perfect EDC gun for almost every situation.  But I didn’t fully appreciate the power of a slide-mounted red dot until I attended a basic two-day optics training class. We’ll talk more about the training in a bit, but my gun with the RMR was the only one that didn’t suffer from sort of optic failure during the drills. Now, officially announced last month, the Trijicon RMR HD adds features and functionality – including a forward facing light sensor – to an already bulletproof optic system for pistols. Let’s take a look.

TFB FIRST LOOK: Introducing the New 5.56 SIG MCX SPEAR-LT

Small arm designs are introduced in both revolutionary and evolutionary processes, each being equally important to developing a reliable and capable firearm system. For manufacturers, engineering a new gun and its progressive iterations, is a painstaking progression that requires refinement, numerous evaluation cycles, and performance improvements. For the consumer, the excitement of a new system is intertwined with compatibility concerns, the hope for additional features in future releases, and waiting  – a cycle that is not unique to the firearm industry. In early 2015, SIG Sauer released the MCX, a revolutionary design in a market awash in direct impingement AR-15 variants. In the years since the initial release, the MCX progressed into the MCX Virtus, arriving at where we are today – the introduction of the SIG MCX SPEAR-LT.

Goodbye Dear Friend – Ronaldo Olive Passes Away

It is with a heavy heart that we announce the loss of TFB staff member Ronaldo Olive after a lengthy battle with cancer. He was born on September 27, 1942 and passed away on March 31, 2021. Ronaldo joined TFB in 2016 and published his first post “UAE’s Caracal wants to make guns in Brazil” on November 29. With decades of experience as an instructor and journalist covering military, law enforcement and civilian firearms development, Ronaldo held a wealth of institutional knowledge. His focus on Brazilian and other South American firearm news and developments gave TFB readers a unique look at the industry that could not be found anywhere else.

CZ BUYS COLT: An Exclusive Interview With Lubomir Kovaik – President CZG

Last week’s announcement finalizing the purchase of Colt by the CZ Group left fans of both brands with more questions than answers. After all, an American icon being acquired by a successful firearms company from the Czech Republic might create a bit of anxiety in the purists of our world. But unlike takeovers of American firearm brands by conglomerates with little to no industry experience, this deal seems to be different. So what does it actually mean when we say CZ Buys Colt? TFB was lucky enough to have access to CZ Group’s President and Chairman of the Board Lubomír Kovařík for an exclusive Q&A session and additional details.

LASER TAGGING: Firearm Laser Engraving And Marking – An Introduction

Firearm laser engraving is a burgeoning business. On a consumer scale, there are a few handful of FFL’s across the country equipped to engrave materials like aluminum, steel, and titanium. These services are provided mostly for the marking requirements for National Firearms Act (NFA) weapons like short barrel rifles (SBR’s) and Form 1 silencers. But as prices have dropped and technology has advanced, the use of powerful lasers in the gun world has exploded. In this TFB series, we’ll research different types of lasers, the types of materials that can be engraved, and follow the process of buying, owning, and using a fiber laser for firearm markings and engravings.

Polymer80 Warrant – Handguns, Customer Records, Prohibited Persons

According to documents sent to TFB from an anonymous source, the ATF investigation into the Polymer80 and the Buy Build Shoot kits appears to focus on three main elements. First, the ATF states that the Buy Build Shoot kits are firearms, not just parts. Second, because these kits are considered firearms, Polymer80 did not follow the regulations guiding the transfer of handguns from an FFL to individuals. And third, a number of the Polymer80 Buy Build Shoot kits were shipped from Polymer80 to prohibited persons. The affidavit in support of the Polymer80 warrant application to search for and seize evidence related to the investigation is detailed, in part, below.

Now Is The Time: Load Up On AR-15 DURAMAG Magazines

There are many critical parts of the AR-15 platform; the fire control group, the bolt, the gas key, the gas tube/block, to list a few, all need to be well-built and reliable. Often overlooked or otherwise taken for granted is the AR-15 magazine – a box with a spring that literally feeds your rifle or carbine with ammo. Without a magazine, Stoner’s little machine becomes a clunky, single shot, auto-ejecting firearm. Call it good planning, cheap insurance or being well outfitted, but stocking up on quality magazines should be a priority. Let’s take a look at the mag lineup from DURAMAG magazines.

BACK TO THE FUTURE: The New GLOCK P80 Classic Edition From Lipsey's

We all have dreamed about having our own time machine. Some of us would travel back to witness historical events, visit with distant ancestors or to memorize next week’s winning lottery numbers. But those of us who are true firearms aficionados often drift off to a place where classic, rare or historic guns are actually obtainable. Once your hands were filled with pre-1986 machineguns, most collectors would gravitate towards their core interests. For me, one of those guns would be a low serial number, new-in-box GLOCK Gen 1 G17. Today, Lipsey’s and GLOCK have offered us the next best thing: a classic edition GLOCK P80 that takes you back to where it all started.

A Die Hard Christmas – TFB Holiday Buying Guide

For the last three years, I have put together a 12 Days Of Christmas series here at TFB that serves as our unofficial ‘letter to Santa’ for gun gifts. The staff’s significant others can take a peek into our world and order up firearm-related gifts that we actually want. This year we have an important Christmas business to attend to so I’m wrapping our gift ideas up alongside a Die Hard Christmas movie argument that will settle the debate once and for all. Theoretically.

Ultimate Guide: The SIG Sauer MCX Rifle, Carbine And Pistol Platform

As Editor In Chief of The Firearm Blog – the best gun resource in the universe* – I’ve had to transition from an operational role to more of an administrative role when it comes to reviews. And because we have such a talented staff with a wide breadth of knowledge and experience, my new position is just as fulfilling. However, I don’t get as much time behind the barrel as I once did, and I am forced to stick to my passions. For me, those are silencers and ultra compact weapon platforms. Combining those two loves is the SIG Sauer MCX rifle and pistol platform – a system I believe is in many ways superior to the widely regarded AR-15.

BOOMER LIST: Top Craptastic Fudd Gear Available Today

As we have demonstrated time and time again within the walls of TFB’s “ HOT GAT or FUDD CRAP” series, being labeled a Fudd is an indictment of a state of mind, not term based solely on the equipment you own or the activities you pursue. Case in point: I own a KA-BAR knife in a leather sheath. What (hopefully) keeps me from being labeled a Fudd is that I don’t believe “no one needs a switchblade for a utility knife”. My point is, you can see the usefulness of Elmer’s ear-warming hat without discovering you are his first cousin on 23andMe.com. But Fudd Gear does exist and is apparently one Prime click away from home delivery.

What Round For…T-Rex? Ammunition For Packing A Fall Woods Gun

Ah, Pumpkin Spice season – My favorite time of year. While the rest of the world is asking for an additional pump of high fructose corn syrup, hold the nutmeg, I feel the urge to retreat into the woods towards peaceful isolation – black coffee in hand. Strangely enough, I’m not alone in my need to go deeper into nature; the woods are full of animals scrambling to fatten up before the lean months of winter. So, before we venture out, let’s take a look at some ammunition choices for a fall woods gun.

New GLOCK 43X (Silver Slimline) and GLOCK 48 Roll Out

In what might have been this holiday season’s worst best kept secret, filled with the drama of artist renderings and feature speculations, TFB is finally ready to debut the real thing. GLOCK is releasing two new Slimline pistols – the GLOCK 43X and a longer slide GLOCK 48 – that are aimed squarely at the everyday carry market. Obviously, both guns are focused on narrow frames and slides, making carrying concealed a bit easier compared to either a compact or full size piece. But what else do these new handguns offer over current subcompact GLOCK models that will convert those shooters who are already comfortable with their current carry choices? Let’s take a look.

ALL HALLOWS EVE: Top 5 Blood-Curdling Gun Related Purchases

Without slicing into a full blown political rant, as “gun people” we all know that there are so called “non-gun-people” that walk among us. Those that, upon seeing a firearm, or even what apppears to be a firearrm, recoil in fear and beg for mercy from its terrible power. Since All Hallows Eve is about fright-night hi jinx, I thought we could turn up the volume and get a little bit freaky: suggesting gun guy/girl purchases that just might make the uninitiated faint from mere talk alone.

ITAR And USML: What Is It And Why Should You Care?

If you’ve purchased weaponlights, lasers, body armor, night vision or other “specialty equipment” related to the firearms industry, the term ITAR Restricted may have made an appearance on your documentation or on product websites. The International Traffic In Arms Regulations or ITAR and the categories outlined in the United States Munitions List or USML is a way to prevent certain technologies from ending up in enemy hands and used against U.S. or Allied Forces. Zero arguments there.

Austrian Twist On A Classic: 10/22 Topside Innovation

When it comes to the most all-around popular firearms in the world, the 10/22 platform has to rank up in the top 10. For 54 years the reliable rimfire rifle (and later pistol) has enjoyed a slow but steady dose of enhancements, most recently including a takedown version that allows owners to easily pack and carry a woods gun or hunting rifle. But some of the best upgrades have come from aftermarket companies who make everything from barrels to receivers. Could this Austrian twist on a classic be the next advancement for the classic gun that has graced the closets and safes of millions of shooters for a half a century?

Welcome to the weekend everyone, and thanks for joining us here at TFB’s Silencer Saturday. If you are in the BATFE application approval process for the transfer (or making) of a National Firearms Act (NFA) controlled weapon(s), you are either the model of patience or overcome with frustration. Even after our numerous conversations about technology upgrades, manpower increases, and the reduced volume of forms post the 41F surge, Form 1 and Form 4 approval rates are sitting at about five to seven months. So, as I sit and wait along with all of you, I ask: where are our stamps?

And with the end of hibernation comes the lust for upgrading our guns and gear. So we thought we could list out some non iron sight options in TFB’s Optics Buying Guide.

MAKE YOUR OWN LUCK – 5 Things To Help You Be A Better Shooter

The last time I professionally celebrated Saint Patrick’s Day, my friends and I used a Super Soaker water cannon to “hyper-drink” Guinness by the pint. And even though that may have be 20+ years ago, I can’t in good conscience recommend such irresponsible activities to anyone outside of your worst enemies. However, I can recommend some gear that, with dedicated practice on your part, can help you to become a better shooter. Get lucky this weekend? Nope, you make your own luck my friend. Wait, that just sounds wrong.
