HOT GAT or FUDD CRAP? Bolt Action Big Bore or Ammo Prices Make Me Cry More?

Welcome everyone to the 238th edition of ‘Hot Gat or Fudd Crap?’, one of our many series here on TFB. If you’re new to the series, this is where we look at the most obscure firearms that are actually for sale and ask the question – is this Gat a sweet deal or only have Fudd appeal? Each week the TFB staff weighs in with their thoughts, but readers get the final say in the poll at the bottom of each article.

In our last edition, our poll showed that you, the readers, by a razor-thin margin decided the golden Smith & Wesson Model 29 was a hot gat.

At this time the original auction has ended, and while the engraved magnum hand cannon won’t be reminding anyone if “they feel lucky”, we know it lives on as a hot gat. We can only hope that it has found its way to a new home.

In this week’s edition of HGFC, we look at a custom Remington 700 chambered in .458 Socom. As is tradition, this wildcat chambered gat is currently up for sale on GunBroker for $1,375 Buy it Now.

HOT GAT or FUDD CRAP? Bolt Action Big Bore or Ammo Prices Make Me Cry More?

For those unfamiliar, the .458 SOCOM was designed as a form, fit, function cartridge for the AR-15. By simply swapping the upper receiver the shooter could swap between very heavy subsonic and supersonic cartridges that perform similarly to a light 45-70 Goverment but in a much smaller platform.

The cartridge was originally designed by Tromix who was contracted to build the first .458 SOCOM rifle in February 2001. The idea was sound except when it came to capacity and weight. The heavier projectiles and oversized cases meant only 10 rounds could fit in a 30-round magazine. While rifles can still be found in this chambering, the caliber never took hold and can still be considered a wildcat. Every once and a while someone decides it’d be a great idea to chamber a non-AR-15 pattern rifle in it, and all I have to say is; “Well, I hope they’re a reloader because ammo isn’t cheap”. At least it comes with a 308 barrel as well.

What do you think? Is this custom 2-barrel Remington 700 worth it for $1,375 or are you better off not having to potentially hunt for reloading supplies? As always I leave it up to you, the readers, to decide.

Hot Gatt because 458 Socom subs vs 8.6BO subs = 1300+ ft/lbs vs 700ish. Plus it's a manual action (quiet af) & being a 458, elevated odds of an appropriately fast twist rates (unlike most 45/70s & so on). Poor man's 510 Whisper.

If you can buy properly headstamped brass, it ain't a wildcat.
