The New 7.62×39 CMMG Dissent is Better than Your AK-47

In this episode of TFBTV, Hop visits CMMG to shoot the newest variant of the Dissent, and the newest variant of the Mk47. But it’s the same gun. The Mk47 “Mutant” is a beefed up AR chambered in 7.62x39mm that takes AK mags, and the Dissent is CMMG’s compact action recoil system that allows for the use of folding stocks. Put them together and you get an AR that shoots 7.62x39mm, takes AK mags, and has a folding stock. So does the AK even still need to exist?

Is this thing actually pronounced "Mark forty-seven?" Thought it was actually a "Em-Kay forty seven" since its always written fully capitalized.

In a Q&A session, Gun Jesus pointed out that the M16 benefits from nearly 60 years of development and improvement. We have juried every attempt at innovation of the AR. Iron sights vs. optics. Calibers. Bullet weight. Barrel length. Charging handles. Ambidextrous controls. Polymer components. Rifling twist rate. Barrel weight. Magazines.

The AK has had some development and improvement, but the inherent design challenges of the original weapon have hampered progress. The original weapon was low-cost, loose tolerance, and intended to be supplied to untrained or conscripted soldiers. I think what CMMG has done here is admirable. Their team has improved on the original design. If I were shopping for an AK, I would consider it. I just don't think there will be a big market for it or it will be adopted by militaries. Because the original design was based on out-producing the enemy for the least cost.
