Schmidt & Bender + Scandinavian Arms = The Bargain S&B 5-25×56 PMII

    Scandinavian Arms LA LRS

Recently Scandinavian Airguns changed its name to Scandinavian Arms, with the aim to offer premium shooting gear to airguns as well as normal firearms. In this move, they expanded beyond the airgun market and acquired the JET-01 firearms chassis system and accessories from Long Range Design (LRD Sweden).

The target is to develop and market premium shooting gear, for a great variety of calibers and disciplines, from airguns to long-range firearms. At the IWA 2023 exhibition, they had a large stand, with all of their new products on display.

Scandinavian Arms teamed up with Schmidt & Bender and the result of their collaboration is the SA LRS – The Light Recoil Scope. Below it can be seen in a Spuhr mount on a JET chassis for long-range target shooting. I tried this system out to 800 meters (including this riflescope), and it’s pretty fantastic.

Essentially, this is a Schmidt & Bender 5-25×56 PMII riflescope with the features that make it difficult to export (i.e. military/ITAR specifications) removed. As much as customers like tactical features, do we really need them? The LRS is still waterproof down to 3 meters.

    The new turret.

Instead of a Schmidt & Bender 5-25×56 that reaches the price range of $3,500 to $5,000, this version is supposed to sell in the €2,500 region ($2,700).

The name LRS – Light Recoil Scope will probably confuse, and unfortunately scare away, a lot of interest. People may think it is only for airguns, which is far from the case. The only caliber you’re not recommended to use is the .50 BMG, which leaves quite a few potential firearms to use it on…

Here is the description of the new SA LRS riflescope:

    The Light Recoil Scope.

The LRS is the result of a unique collaboration between Schmidt & Bender and Scandinavian Arms to offer the best optical sight for competition shooters around the world.

Trough our years as competition shooters, SA recognised the need to make better optics available to a wider audience.

True testing and a meticulous evaluation process we decided to build our scope around Schmidt & Benders true and trusted 5-25x56PMII scope. The benchmark for the industry in terms of optical quality and mechanical reliability.

The new LRS is developed to be a scope for a broad range of competition shooting, from Airguns to Long Range firearms and while the LRS meets the present needs of the competition shooters its features and specs are carefully tuned to make it available to a wider audience.

    Features

The LRS features a specially designed magnification ring and turrets with larger circumferences and deeper groves to better accommodate gloved operation in all weather conditions while also improving ergonomics in general use.

The Elevation turret features a double turn. A second turn indicator pops up when entering the second turn and offers both a tactile and a clear visible indication that you’re on the second revolution of the elevation.

The Zero stop is set at 1 MRAD (10 clicks) below ZERO to be able to adjust for offsets due to different ammo, suppressors etc.

The 5-25×56 LRS’s unmatched parallax ranges from 10m to infinity makes it perfect for both your airgun, 22lr as well as your Long Range rifle.

As the name declares, the scope’s use is for light recoil rifles only. Use on heavy recoiling systems like the .50BMG or similar is not recommended.

    Reticle

    • The 1st focal plane Multi Competition Reticle is designed by SA and offers a clean open center with a center dot and is designed to work well through the full magnifying range, with increasing line size as the magnification decreases.
    • As 95% of the corrections to a well aimed shot is made within a 2-mrad square (80% within the the 1-mrad square) of the center of the reticle. The Multi Competition Reticle offers a reference points at each corner of the 2-mrad square to assist the shooter to quickly make corrections.
    • A thin lined measuring scale is located at the top right of the center to assist in the estimation of unknown distance targets in field shooting competitions.
    • An SA “Hold-Over” reticle will be available as an option later in 2023.

These turrets were great to work with and work well with gloves on also.

While the specs might be a little lower, and this riflescope is not as “tactical” as some “operators” might want it to be, the overall performance is still there and I think the riflescope looks better than the usual black S&B. For around half the price of the normal S&B this is a steal for anyone looking for a main riflescope, or a secondary for their training gun.
