POTD: Chinese NDM-86 SVD in 7.62 NATO

The Chinese NDM-86 SVD Dragunov.

Our daily article series called Photo Of The Day will take you to some very exciting and unusual places sometimes. In this case, the caliber is more of a curiosity than the rifle itself, as we have a Chinese NDM-86 SVD clone chambered in 7.62 NATO. It comes from the collection of Dominion Defense LLC.

Here’s the caption from Cinematic Arms, who took the photos:

One that has been on my bucket list of firearms to photograph for a long time. Thanks to @dominiondefensellc for providing today’s post, a Norinco, Chinese NDM-86 styled and closely related to the Russian sniper rifle , the Dragunov, normally chambered 7.62x54r, this one happens to be in 7.62×51, ie 308/ 7.62 Nato.

Can someone explain, like to a child, why is the gas port so far from the muzzle? Doesn't that make the rifle overgassed and doesn't it make the cycling process start while projectile still is in the barrel, somehow affecting the accuracy?

  @Martin Grønsdal The farther forwards the gas port is, the longer you have to make the piston, which makes the piston heavier and increases the total reciprocating mass. Nor is a gun with a port halfway down the barrel necessarily overgassed, that depends on port size in addition to location, and yes, the Dragunov was engineered correctly. This example's gas port appears to be in the same place as the original design.
  Finally, no, the action doesn't actually open or even get close while the bullet is still going down the muzzle, that's just plain misunderstanding the speeds involved. The bullet is accelerating to it's full, supersonic muzzle velocity when it passes the gas port, and only then is any gas pressure at all applied to the piston, while the bullet is still accelerating. By the time the piston has started to move the bolt carrier, the bullet is already out. And then once the bolt carrier is moving, it travels the entire camming distance to rotate the bolt open, before the bolt face begins moving. The bullet is long gone. If it wasn't, the gun would be straight up dangerous, and it's not.
