[SHOT 2023] New Ammunition from True Velocity

True Velocity is gearing up for scale manufacture of its innovative polymer cased ammunition in more calibers. At SHOT Show 2023 we had the opportunity to catch up with Dave Stouffer, True Velocity’s executive vice president (weapons division). He explained how True Velocity are preparing to bring their polymer case technology to some familiar calibers.

Initially developed for the US Army’s Next Generation Squad Weapon System program, True Velocity’s ammunition was originally paired with a bullpup rifle design, the RM277, developed by General Dynamics-OTS. The ammunition and the rifle design are both now owned by True Velocity (and Lone Star Future Weapons). Back in July 2021, True Velocity made their first polymer cased .308 available, first as commemorative box sets and subsequently for the general market. Since then they have agreed a number of important distribution deals with BassPro and Cabellas and the rollout of additional calibers is planned.

True Velocity plans to release their 5.56x45mm round, which Stouffer described as 50% lighter than a conventional round, first. Having handled some accurately weighted dummy cartridges the 5.56 round feels incredibly light. This will eventually be followed by a .223 Remington load.

In the summer of 2023 the company hopes to introduce their civilian 6.8mm cartridge, which will be tipped with a 135gr Maximus from Cutting Edge or a 145gr ELD-X projectile from Hornady. True Velocity say that they’re working with various companies on weapons chambered in the new rounds.

True Velocity also plans a .50 BMG round which will be loaded with a 660gr standard ball projectile. Again the accurately weighted dummy we were able to handle felt incredibly light compared to a conventional round. The military applications of a lightweight .50 BMG round are compelling but the round will also eventually be available to civilian shooters. The company hopes to have this available towards the end of 2023.

True Velocity are moving to expand on their firm research and development base and expand into scale production of their ammunition. They have already teased future loads for .338NM and 6.5CM. Keep an eye on www.tvammo.com for updates on availability.
