Converting .308 Winchester gas guns to 6.5 Creedmoor is normally just a matter of barrel change. No wonder why every time a company introduces an AR10 pattern gun, it’s almost guaranteed that they’ll be offering it in .308 Win and 6.5 CM. Well, the .277 Fury has the same case head and overall length dimensions as the .308 and 6.5 so it was only a matter of time before SIG announced versions of their MCX Spear chambered in these cartridges. At a SIG Sauer range event hosted in Clark County Shooting Complex, we had a chance to take a look at and shoot the SIG Sauer MCX Spear in 6.5 Creedmoor.

The 6.5 Creedmoor version of the SIG Sauer MCX Spear rifle will be available with 16″ barrels (.308 Win Spear will be offered with 16″ or 13″ barrels) fitted with QD muzzle devices for SIG SLX/SLH suppressor. MCX Spear rifles have a quick barrel change feature and SIG will also offer caliber conversion kits shortly after the launch of these rifles which is expected to be at the end of February. The estimated MSRP of the SIG Sauer MCX Spear in 6.5 Creedmoor is about $4200.

The .277 Fury is a much higher pressure cartridge than the .308 Win and 6.5 CM (SAAMI Maximum Average Pressure of 80K vs 62K psi) that’s why the .277 Fury version of MCX Spear and the caliber conversion kits will come with a stronger bolt. That said, the capability of this weapon/cartridge system to withstand such pressures and the quick barrel change feature open up new possibilities for wildcatters to create cartridges based on the .277 Fury case that will outperform any other existing cartridge of a given caliber and dimensions. For example, imagine a .264/6.5mm caliber cartridge that has dimensions similar to 6.5 Creedmoor or .260 Remington but performs like a .264 Win Mag.
