[SHOT 2023] Hands On with Wilkinson Tactical’s CR-12 Warrior

Back at SHOT 2020 we tried Wilkinson Tactical’s AR shotgun. This year we caught up with them again at this year’s Industry at the Range Day and they ran us through their new models and their conversion combo that allows the lower to be used with either a shotgun or AR-10 .308 upper. The conversion takes seconds.

Since we last saw Wilkinson Tactical their product range has expanded significantly and their hopes of offering the conversion combo have been realised. Their newest offering is the CR-12 Warrior which has a detachable side folding stock and has been submitted to several military trials, with entry into others anticipated later this year.

The CR-12 currently feeds from adapted Turkish-made 12ga shotgun magazines. Wilkinson Tactical adapt the magazines with their own spring and follower but retain the magazine body and floor plate. Jim Wilkinson, the company’s founder and lead engineer, considers the magazines to be the weapons last weak link and explained that they plan to manufacture their own magazines.

While the design of the magazines is sound enough, he explained that the metallurgy of the magazines leaves a lot of be desired due to soft feed lips which can induce failures to feed. We experienced this when we put a couple of magazines through the CR-12.
