In a year when a lot of semiauto manufacturers are coming out with mag fed lever guns, lever gun veterans Henry Repeating Arms ironically made the opposite move at SHOT Show 2023 Industry Day at the Range: They brought an ambidextrous 9mm semiautomatic carbine. The new Henry Homesteader 9mm 16 inch barreled carbine with ghost ring sights, a traditional wooden stock, and the provision to mount an optic on the receiver.

Looking like a mini-BAR, the Henry homesteader is 100% ambidextrous, with the caveat that ejection will always be to the right hand side.  There is a cut in the left hand side of the receiver to allow the operating handle to be moved from right to left.  The Homesteader has a sliding, tang mounted safety, bolt hold open controls on both sides of the triggerguard, and a centrally mounted magazine release. Its barrel is also threaded for suppressed use.

Furthering the modularity of the Homesteader is its magazine well.  The Homesteader has the capability to accept Henry’s proprietary magazines, Glock Magazines, Sig 320 magazines, and Smith And Wesson M&P magazines.  The Magwell adapter for Sig and S&W is apparently one and the same.  The Homesteader will ship as a Henry-magazine only model, a model with the Glock adapter, and a model with the Sig/S&W adapter.

The Homesteader was a smooth, sweet shooter out to 100 with an optic and suppressor equipped.  The trigger is quite nice, and the carbine pointed and balanced easily.  Despite being blowback, it wasn’t a very gassy shooting experience either.  I look forward to more trigger time with the Homesteader in the future, as the carbine starts shipping Feb 1st. MSRP will be $928 for Henry magazine only, or $959 for models that have an additional adapter for Glock or Sig/S&W magazines.
