Photo Of The Day and we go to Italy to see what mountain warfare is all about. Above you see a U.S. Army paratrooper assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 503rd Parachute Infantry Regiment as he observes an objective. The paratroopers are working together with the Italian Army’s Alpini Brigade as part of the Exercise Summer Resolve in the Province of Bolzano, Italy, in October 2022.

Caption about the exercise Alpine Stars:

Exercise Alpine Star is an annual Italian Army hosted, multinational and multi-phased mountain and arctic warfare training exercise. Reconnaissance paratroopers from the 173rd Airborne Brigade integrate within select companies of the Italian Army’s Alpini Brigade to learn techniques in traversing, ascending and descending multi-seasonal mountainous environments while teaching tactics, techniques and procedures of U.S. Army battle drills to allies. During the summer phase, Exercise Summer Resolve, key training focuses on alpine climbing and repelling while during the winter phase, Exercise Winter Resolve, key training focuses on various types of skiing and ice climbing. This training plays a key role in further developing the relationship, interoperability and mission capabilities of both forces.
