Welcome everyone to the 173rd edition of ‘Hot Gat or Fudd Crap?’, one of our many series here on TFB. If you’re new to the series, this is where we look at the most obscure firearms that are actually for sale and ask the question – is this Gat a sweet deal or only has a Fudd appeal?  Each week the TFB staff weighs in with their thoughts, but readers get the final say in the poll at the bottom of each article.

In our last edition, our poll showed that you, the readers, decided the STG44-themed AR-15 was fudd crap.

At the time this article is being written, the original auction remains up with zero bids on the WWII-themed gat.  We can only hope it finds its way to a new home in the near future.

In this week’s edition of HGFC, we look at a heavily accessorized M&P15 Sport II chambered in .223/5.56 NATO. As is tradition, this tactical-themed gat is currently up for sale on GunBroker for $1,450 Buy It Now.

This looks and feels a lot like someone’s first AR-15 that they bought at a very young age.  Like an 18-year-old who after playing years of Call of Duty finds out he can own an AR-15.  Rifle purchased, he now needs to get every upgrade for that rifle that he (or she) saw in the game.  It’s not about practicality at this point.  It’s purely about aesthetics.  So even if you can’t afford a real PEQ15, having a knockoff is alright.  Remember, it’s purely about the aesthetics at this point.  Well then the years pass on and maybe you bravely posted your rifle on a few forums and learned it wasn’t the best.  Hey, it wasn’t your fault, you were just having a bit of fun, but now you have to sell that rifle and get something better.

While that’s just a theory for how this rifle might have come into being, it’s also something I did years back when I had just turned 18.  Instead of a Smith & Wesson M&P15, it was a very heavy (without accessories) Rock River AR-15.  I purchased what I thought were excellent “upgrades” and slowly and painfully learned the error of my ways and why it’s better to buy once and cry once.

This isn’t to say the M&P15 Sport II is a bad rifle.  Quite the opposite actually.  For what you pay, I think it’s fantastic value and a great first AR-15.  Choices these days are much better than when I bought my first AR, and this one is certainly much lighter.  Or at least it would be with all the accessories removed.  Yes, this person fell victim to the tacticool look.  Something that’s great at turning light rifles into overweight pointless safe queens.  But there’s still a good rifle underneath all of those accessories.

Accessories aside, I think the price is more or less fair for this rifle at just under $1,500.  Sure a basic M&P15 Sport II would cost less, but who knows, maybe I’m being too hard on this rifle.  Do you think it’s worth it for the price?  Or would you rather buy something else instead?  As always, I leave it up to you, the readers, to decide.
