HOT GAT or FUDD CRAP? Ultimate 1911 PCC or Overmatch Travesty?

Welcome everyone to the 154th edition of ‘Hot Gat or Fudd Crap?’, one of our many series here on TFB. If you’re new to the series, this is where we look at the most obscure firearms that are actually for sale and ask the question – is this Gat a sweet deal or only has a Fudd appeal?  Each week the TFB staff weighs in with their thoughts, but readers get the final say in the poll at the bottom of each article.

In our last edition, our poll showed that you, the readers, (and about 12k or so more than usual voters) decided the Pioneer Arms Hellpup was a hot gat?

HGFC – AK Makeover or Cartel Leftovers? — Poll Results

Poll results are pretty skewed on this one, so it’s hard to call it a win.  I can say that at this time, the original auction remains up with the gold and silver clad AK still up for grabs.  We can only hope this pistol will make it to a new home in the near future.

In this week’s edition of HGFC, we look at a MechTech carbine converted Stoeger 1911 chambered in .45 ACP. As is tradition, this extra-long 1911 is currently up for sale on GunBroker for $1,225 Starting Bid Or $1,750 Buy It Now.

Let’s see what the Staff had to say about this week’s offering:

“When you want to show those youngsters that you too know what “Overmatch” means!” – Giorgio O.

“It’s an uglified, semi-auto Sten in .45 ACP, what’s not to like? Although, I think I’ve already answered my own question.” – Doug E.

    “Wow, perfection.” – Matt M.

“We have Kriss Vector Carbine at home. Same ‘reliability’ but with less capacity.” – Nick C.

Selling this historically chambered gat is GunBroker seller Blue Ridge Defense, located in Hayesville NC.  Let’s see what they had to say about this MechTech Steoger Conversion.

.45 ACP Stoeger Llama 1911 Lower with Mech-Tech Carbine Upper. Custom. Unique.

This is a .45 ACP Stoeger 1911 that has the upper slide assembly replaced with a Mech-Tech CCU (pistol-to-carbine conversion upper), left side-charging 16-1/2″ Carbine barrel with muzzle brake and Picatinny rail. Though built upon a 1911 handgun, this is classified as a carbine. It is outfitted with a large-format Tasco ProPoint red-dot scope for rapid and accurate target acquisition. It is a nice, lightweight, stainless steel barrel and polymer stock. Get the reliability of a 1911 .45 ACP in a carbine for inexpensive target/varmint/hobby shooting. Reasonable offers considered.  Additional magazines are available for $20 each upon request.  Oh, and by the way, the Prop Master for The Walking Dead, an in-law relation to our family, was impressed by this weapon and asked if he could take a photograph of it back to his NC studio.

I have taken this to the range and tested it with live ammunition, firing about ten rounds to sight in the optic.  It operates smoothly with surprisingly little felt recoil.  It is a nice target shooter.  I only set it at 50 yards, but the pattern was easily kept within an inch off of a bench.  The light weight of the weapon makes it easy to hold on target.Returns accepted, shipped back up to three days from receipt and upon notification of seller.  The weapon must be unfired. Buyer pays return shipping and lost Gunbroker fees, and a 10% restocking fee based upon the purchase price is deducted from the refund. NOT LEGAL FOR PURCHASE IN CALIFORNIA or NEW YORK, and possibly other locations that are not 2A friendly.  Check before ordering. SORRY.

Given that this looks like a project that died in the 90s, I was surprised when a quick google search revealed MechTech is still making these conversion kits.  Granted the kits look very different compared to this one, but they currently make kits for Glock/XD/1911 pattern firearms.

This kit doesn’t match any on their website, so it could be from the early 90s for all we know.  Certainly getting more retro vibes from this gun that appears to be someone’s attempt to recoup their investment.

Certainly, this is an interesting idea, but with the popularity of PCCs nowadays, I don’t see how this makes any practical or financial sense.  Kitting out a platform built around single stack .45 ACP magazines seems bad from the start, but I’m always surprised by what 1911 enthusiasts will spend their money on.  So is this worth it for the price?  As always, I leave it up to you, the readers, to decide.
