POTD: The L129A1 Sharpshooter Rifle in Cyprus

    L129A1 Sharpshooter Rifle

A sunny trip to Cyprus is what’s on offer in today’s Photo Of The Day. We have soldiers from the RAF Regiment conducting Ground Extraction Force (GEF) exercises as part of an ongoing Joint Personnel Recovery which will continue as they return to the U.K. Whilst deployed, 1 Squadron Force Protection have continued to uphold their regular training, including maintaining their annual competency on the L129A1 Sharpshooter Rifle. The L129A1 is a semi-automatic high-precision designated marksmanship rifle.

The large lenses on the optic must offer a great resolution.

L129A1 Sharpshooter Rifle is chambered in 7.62x51mm NATO. With a weight of 9 lbs 14 oz, it can be taken on patrol and therefore fills the gap between the regular service rifle and the sniper rifle. Below you see the SA80 rifle, using the 5.56x45mm ammo.

The terrain in Cyprus has offered 1 Squadron Force Protection the opportunity to train in the heat and on the rough ground that is similar to that found to many of the airfields on which they operate.
