TFB Weekly Web Deals 18: Gunsmithing Tools and Accessories
Hello and welcome to TFB Weekly Web Deals 18. I’ve been having a lot of recent discussions with some gunsmiths including our very own Sam S. Like a lot of you out there, I have a litany of tools strewn about several different tool boxes, and it’s not only highly disorganized at this point, I also have tools in there I’ve only used once and forgotten about. However, if you’re just getting into gunsmithing or you’re looking for some good, basic tools to get your collection started (or set up as a nice gift for a friend), I’ve brought you some of the best suggestions for gunsmithing equipment as recommended by Sam. Let us know what you use and what tools you’d recommend down in the comments below!

This is considered a “core” item for almost any gun owner, especially if you run optics on any of your firearms. From what I’ve gathered over the years, about one out of every two TFB writers has one of these including myself and they’re quite honestly one of the handiest torque wrenches for firearms out there.
Tipton’s® Best Gun Vise™ is the best tool you can own for working on your firearms. The vise was designed to accommodate the widest possible array of firearms for cleaning, maintenance, or gunsmithing, and is easily configurable to handle bolt-action rifles, break-open shotguns, AR-15’s, and handguns. A central aluminum channel lets the user move individual components to the ideal position for their firearm. Each individual component then adjusts to the perfect position for secure support. The rear base features two adjustable offset clamps for a tight grip on a wide range of buttstock configurations. The Best Gun Vise™ is extremely stiff and is made from high-quality, solvent-resistant material that will stand up to years of hard use.
Quite honestly, the best gun vise on the market for the money you’re paying for it. A good vise will make it a whole lot easier to mount scopes, and accessories and push in and or remove roll pins and screws on various parts of nearly any firearm.
GRACE USA 8 ounce Brass Hammer with Delrin Tip is precision manufactured and hand assembled entirely within the USA. The brass head is hand turned (the ole fashion way, one at a time) from CDA 360 brass rod, extruded in a USA mill, and beautfully hand polished. On one end of this brass hammer is a finely crafted, high quality Delrin Tip that is securely locked into place. This Delrin tip offers the quick availablilty of a softer end when the need arises. A properly seasoned, turned in the USA, hickory handle is then pressed into the finished brass head and securely brass pinned. This hammer is a work of art yet designed to serve the professional or hobbyist gunsmith, woodworker, mechanic, and machinist with years of hard use. GRACE USA products are proudly 100% Made in the USA.
When you’re working on firearms, you really want light and precise taps rather than the sheer brute force and weight that a claw hammer provides. A brass Delrin-tipped hammer will help you drift pistol sights, remove roll pins, and gently tap parts into place without marring the surfaces or finish.
The Wheeler Engineering Roll Pin Punches are machined from hardened steel to prevent bending or breaking while driving any size roll pin. The punches are designed with a hemispherical tip to provide proper alignment of the roll pin to prevent damage to the roll pin and firearm. The 9 piece set includes: 5/16″, 1/4″, 7/32″, 3/16″, 5/32″, 1/8″, 3/32″, 5/64″, and 1/16″ punches in a durable nylon sheath.
Roll pins can be a nightmare to take out if you don’t have a proper roll pin punch set. This set has everything from a 5/16th down to a 1/16th” size and should be able to handle just about any firearm you’ve got. The counterbored tips are great for getting the process started with the above hammer.
The Pferd coarse cut machinist hand file is 8″ long, has a handle, and has a rectangular shape with diamond grit for filing straight surfaces. The file has diamond grit on both sides and edges for removal of hard, brittle material such as hardened steels, hard metals, glass, ceramics, or fiber-reinforced plastics. The grit has been electroplated to the file surface for durability. An ergonomic plastic handle helps provide secure gripping.
Great for hand-fitting stocks and stubborn gun parts. The diamond grit cuts through most material and gives metal a nice smooth cut and finish when handled correctly. A great addition to any basic armorer tool kit.
