HOT GAT or FUDD CRAP? Skull Clad or Just Bad?

HOT GAT or FUDD CRAP? Skull Clad or Just Bad?

Welcome everyone to the 152nd edition of ‘Hot Gat or Fudd Crap?’, one of our many series here on TFB. If you’re new to the series, this is where we look at the most obscure firearms that are actually for sale and ask the question – is this Gat a sweet deal or only has a Fudd appeal?  Each week the TFB staff weighs in with their thoughts, but readers get the final say in the poll at the bottom of each article.

In our last edition, our poll showed that you, the readers, decided the BGW-15 was a pile of fudd crap.

At this time, the original auction remains up on GunBroker without any bids.  We can only hope this rifle will find its way to a responsible new home in the near future.

In this week’s edition of HGFC, we look at a custom Henry H003 Pump Action .22LR. As is tradition, this skull-clad take on a classic is currently up for sale on GunBroker for $895 Starting Bid or $895 Buy It Now.

Let’s see what the Staff had to say about this week’s offering:

“Johnny Depp just called, and he said to throw that boat oar back to the Kraken” – Adam S.

“Are you worried about the direction of society today? Today’s youth are purchasing firearms without a Punisher skull, wolf, or cross (Maltese, Christian, Iron, or otherwise) of any kind prominently emblazoned on nary a stock nor slide. Pull out that Big Dog:tm: chain wallet and set daddy’s lil truck driver on the right trajectory with this pump-action 22 with realistic skull engraving in the stock. (Baby’s first karambit:registered: not included)” – James Reeves

Selling this one-off gat is GunBroker seller Custom Creations, located in West Chester, OH.  Let’s see what they had to say about the custom stock engraving on this Henry.

    Henry H003T pump-action rifle.

Aftermarket hi-viz fiber optic 3-dot sights installed and test fired.

Gently used. Two range trips. One before sight installation and one afterward.

There are two very minor scuffs: One near the end of barrel from mishap during sight installation. And another teeny tiny scratch at the bottom of the stock below the skull from when my chisel slipped!

    20″ octagonal barrel, blued steel.

    38.5″ overall length

3/8″ grooved receiver for mounting a scope if desired.

    14″ length of pull

Tube holds 15 LR or 21 short rounds.

The buttstock features a carving of a skeleton crawling out of the stock. The buttstock was removed in order to work on it and has my signature on the inside (visible only if removed from the stock). It has been finished with a coat of clear matte urethane to match the original stock finish.

Skeletons and skulls remind me of how we are all mortal and will die eventually–to make the most out of every day because eventually you will just be a pile of bones. Carpe diem, yolo, or whatever the kids are saying these days.

Please ask any questions prior to bidding. Thank you!

UPS shipping is very fast. Orders usually arrive within 3 to 5 days of receipt of payment.

I grew up during the Assault Weapons Ban.  A time when even the worst high capacity 10/22 magazines sold for a premium.  During this time, I had a tube-fed Marlin Model 60, and one of my friends had a very similar pump action .22LR.  Both our rifles had that sweet 15-round capacity, where anything past 10 rounds was a bonus.  Fast forward to now, and we have, well this.

I at least appreciate the seller being honest about this rifle and its intended message.  I think owning a simple wristwatch would be a better metaphor for the value of time.  But I guess skulls are what other people need as a visual reminder.

While I really don’t like the stock, I have to admit there’s some quality craftsmanship in the engraving.  Certainly, this wasn’t something that was done in a few hours.  Most importantly though, it looks as if the stock and sights are the only things that have been modified.  So it’s certainly something that can be replaced by a future buyer of differing tastes.

So what’s the market for a custom one-off Henry H003T with a skull engraved in the stock?  Is this something you’d even consider buying with modern semi-autos so prevalent in the market today?  As always I leave it up to you, the readers, to decide.
