Active Military (and Qualified Veterans) Get Permitless Carry in Louisiana

Active Military (and Qualified Veterans) Get Permitless Carry in Louisiana

Senate Bill 143 (Act 680), was signed by Governor John Bel Edwards. The law enacts LRS 14:95.M to provide concealed carry exemptions for active military and veterans who meet certain requirements. The Act can be read at https://legis.la.gov/Legis/ViewDocument.aspx?d=1290223

    Laws and Regulations @ TFB:

In short, persons not otherwise prohibited from carrying a firearm can carry without a concealed handgun permit in the State of Louisiana if they, among other things, are:

[R]eserve or active-duty member of any branch of the United States Armed Forces; a member of the Louisiana National Guard or the Louisiana Air National Guard; or a former member of any branch of the United States Armed Forces, the Louisiana National Guard, or the Louisiana Air National Guard who has been honorably discharged from service.

Read the statute and consider consulting legal counsel to make sure you meet these requirements before attempting to carry a gun without a permit on this basis. Remember that ignorance of the law is not an excuse for breaking it.

The new law will go into effect on August 1, 2022.
