Some recent alarming news has come about from one of the country’s largest distributors of firearms, accessories, and ammunition. In a now-missing Facebook post, Brownells stated on July 1st that the United Parcel Service (UPS), had allegedly terminated their account and would no longer be accepting any of their shipments. A check of the Brownells shipping page currently only lists USPS and FedEx as available carrier options. In addition, the Florida-based Ghost Firearms were also notified that their account would be terminated for allegedly “violating applicable laws concerning the shipment of “ghost guns to unauthorized locations.” The full letter sent to Ghost Firearms has been posted below.

While the firearms retailer giant Brownells sells everything from live ammunition, firearms, primers, propellants, and firearms parts, the much smaller Ghost Firearms basically only sells off-the-shelf non-regulated items like 80% lower receivers, lower parts kits, optics, charging handles, and muzzle devices. My understanding of the letter above seems to indicate that UPS won’t be the ones seizing and destroying firearms but more likely the ATF which has regulatory authority over such matters.

The Owner of Ghost Firearms – Joe Zatar – reached out to his local UPS representative who apparently had no idea his account had been terminated. What’s worse is that Ghost Firearms had just shipped nearly $30,000 worth of products to customers and this is on top of a recent ATF visit just two weeks earlier where Ghost Firearms was told that they were “completely legal” according to Zatar. In addition, Zantar confirmed that the company makes sure not to ship to states where 80% firearm receivers are outlawed.

The only way that Ghost Firearms would be in violation of the current “Ghost Gun” laws on the books is if they shipped all the tooling, instructions, and jigs needed to make an 80% receiver “really completable.” Since Ghost Firearms does not sell such tools or instructions on their website, I don’t personally see how they could be in violation of ATF 2021R-05F. According to both retailers, attempts to get a response or clarification from UPS’s compliance department have been met with only silence. None of the parts Ghost Firearms is capable of shipping meet the criteria listed in UPS’s own rules.

As of writing, this is all the information we currently have on this situation. It is unknown at this time whether or not more firearms parts manufacturers, and retailers will receive the same treatment or if this is some sort of internal issue being generated by rogue actors within UPS. This could also just be a case of UPS being completely clueless about the intricacies of shipping unregulated firearms parts. Let us know your thoughts down in the comments.
