What is the Best Cheap .38 Special Revolver?

James Reeves
by James Reeves

In this episode of TFBTV, James Reeves reviews the Rock Island Armory M206 .38 Special revolver. The M206 has been made for decades in the Philippines. It is a popular seller, but for $259, you know it isn’t going to be perfect. But James makes the case for the M206, and why this Colt Detective Special semi-clone might be the best cheap revolver on the market right now.

I was disappointed with both Taurus revolvers I bought over the COVID drama period. One in .357 and one in .38.

The cylinder does not swing away with enough clearance to allow for speed loaders.

@Marc I was never fond of Taurus Poly frames. They have gotten better over time but the clearance issue is still there. Guess they figure people wont be shooting them much.

I'd be interested to see how this revolver fares over the long haul. You couldn't expect it to hold up as well as, say, an SP101 (the M1A1 Abrams of 2-inch revolvers), but I wouldn't mind seeing it compared to, say, a Charter (Charco? Whatever they are now). Let the battle of the affordable snubbies begin!

@JJJingleheimerSchmidt Other than not having to switch hands to reload, the Southpaw is like the Charter snubbie I have. Whereas a Pit Bull would be cheaper to shoot.
