Welcome everyone to the 136th edition of ‘Hot Gat or Fudd Crap?’, one of our many series here on TFB. If you’re new to the series, this is where we look at the most obscure firearms that are actually for sale and ask the question – is this Gat a sweet deal or only has a Fudd appeal?  Each week the TFB staff weighs in with their thoughts, but readers get the final say in the poll at the bottom of each article.

In our last edition, our poll showed that you, the readers, decided the American Derringer was fudd crap.

In the early ’90s, a small firearms company called D-MAX went on to produce this – the Sidewinder.  The company was later purchased by Magnum Research which would then produce these pistols under the BFR branding.  Typically when someone mentions a 45 Colt / 410 Bore handgun you’re inclined to think Taurus Judge or maybe a Smith & Wesson Governor.  The Judge was released in the Mid 2000s, and the Governor came to market in 2011.  So to that end, the sidewinder was truly ahead of its time.

Once the novelty factor has worn off, this platform becomes very niche.  I have to admit I like the longer barrel on the sidewinder, but I’m not sure if it warrants the price tag.  I wasn’t familiar with the DMAX fanbase at the start of this article, but now I’m certain there’s a buyer out there somewhere for this pistol.

So what do you think?  Is it worth $2k to have one of the first .45 Colt / 410 Bore handguns or is your money better spent elsewhere?  As always, I leave it up to you, the readers, to decide.
