Welcome everyone to the 135th edition of ‘Hot Gat or Fudd Crap?’, one of our many series here on TFB. If you’re new to the series, this is where we look at the most obscure firearms that are actually for sale and ask the question – is this Gat a sweet deal or only has a Fudd appeal? Each week the TFB staff weighs in with their thoughts, but readers get the final say in the poll at the bottom of each article.

In our last edition, our poll showed that you, the readers, deemed the Colt Sheriff’s Model to be a hot gat.

At this time, the original auction is still ongoing with a current bid of $2,025, and roughly five days remaining.  With no reserve, it’s anyone’s guess who will take home this certified hot gat.

The American Derringer comes in a few different variants, but this .25 caliber one is the LM5.  The LM5 is a magazine-fed blowback-operated semi-automatic.  It features a frame-mounted thumb safety, 5-round magazine, and heel magazine release.  This one has some interesting engraving that at various points looks like marijuana plant leaves.

HGFC has featured a lot of engraving over the years, but this engraving doesn’t look or feel right.  Judging by the photos alone, I’d say the engraving was hand done.  Now, this could be a good thing if the engraver were a master engraver.  If not, you can end up with a lot of uneven engraving.  This makes the gun look scarred up.  Personally, I think this gun would have been better off if it was left alone.

I’m certainly not in the market for a Derringer of any kind, but I’m curious about the demographic who is.  Is this gun a hot gat because of the custom work?  Or is this piece a cautionary tale?  As always, I leave it up to you, the readers, to decide.
