While perusing the floor of IWA 2022 we came across a company that none of us had ever heard of before – Bioammo. With hunters, outdoorsmen, and shooters becoming increasingly environmentally conscious, Bioammo set out to make completely biodegradable ammunition that won’t leak toxic chemicals into our environment and eventually our very own food chain. For example, one spent shotgun hull, wad cup, and base wad equal on average about 3 to 5 plastic shopping bags in material – that is a lot of plastic to leave laying around. So what’s the deal with Bioammo?

[IWA 2022] Bioammo -100% Biodegradable Shotgun Ammunition
Bioammo has centered their 100% biodegradable ammunition around the vision of leaving our landfills, farms, and wetlands free from plastics and the micro-plastics they eventually break down into. Instead, Bioammo’s ammunition is both biodegradable and compostable meaning that instead of simply degrading, the empty hulls are actually eaten by organisms already in the environment. The shells themselves are made from a vegetable-based biopolymer that is easily consumed by micro-organisms.
While Bioammo does offer their Lux ammunition lineup in traditional lead shot loads, they also offer the same lineup of ammunition in a steel configuration. Steel is often used as an alternative to lead due to its non-toxic nature within the environment combined with its affordability over copper or tungsten. The company also has a lineup of dedicated hunting ammo – their Blue line which features non-lead and non-steel alloy-based pellets that still use the same 0% plastic design as the Lux line. Perfect for hunters.
I think it is universally agreed that no hunter, or outdoorsman would want toxic chemicals, micro-plastics, and other materials affecting local wildlife and water sources. That being said, hunters, shooters, and outdoorsmen also want the absolute best performance from their shotshells. According to Peter from Bioammo, “you can be as green as you want, as environmental as you want, but if your product doesn’t do the job, then it isn’t gonna be of any use to anybody.” Peter also claims that Bioammo’s vegetable-based wads, shells, and bases are more rigid than actual plastic which in turn leads to great performance.
While their shells do indeed cost more to manufacture, according to Peter, BIoammo’s shotgun shells are priced competitively enough to make them an attractive option for people who are both environmentally conscious and looking for a shotgun shell that performs well.
Bioammo’s current lineup currently only includes cartridges for 12-gauge but just announced at IWA 2022, 20-gauge, slug, and buckshot options will soon be available.
