Photo Of The Day: When I shot the SCAR 17 for the first time I was surprised how light it was for a major caliber. According to the specifications, the weight is 8 pounds or 3.6 kg, with the 16.25″ barrel. SCAR stands for Special Operations Combat Assault Rifle. This one is upgraded with a lower from Handl Defense.

For more information about the scope, check out our review: The 1-8×24 PM II ShortDot Dual CC – from Schmidt & Bender.

Here is how FN America describes the FN SCAR 17S ( Source).

Experience the long-range accuracy, downrange power, exceptional reliability and match winning versatility of the FN SCAR® 17S, the semi-auto only version of the U.S. Special Operations Command’s newest service rifle. Chambered in 7.62x51mm, the FN SCAR® 17S features a free-floating, cold hammer-forged MIL-SPEC barrel with hardchromed bore. Fully-ambidextrous operating controls instantly adapt the FN SCAR® 17S to any user or any shooting position. The receiver-integrated MIL-STD-1913 optical rail plus three accessory rails enable mounting of a wide variety of scopes, electronic sights, tactical lights and lasers. The telescoping, side-folding polymer stock is fully adjustable for comb height and length of pull.

This privately owned SCAR has a QD suppressor from Swiss B&T and comes fairly close in configuration to the French SCAR-H PR. The extension rail is from Midwest Industries.

8lbs is light? I mean, it isn't heavy for sure. But my AR-10 with a fluted heavy barrel that is 18" long is 9lbs even. WITH scope and rings. Basically 8lbs without optic. So the same weight as the SCAR17 without an optic, but with a slightly longer barrel.

@ The SCAR 17 is one of the lightest military-grade 7.62 platform on the market even by today standards, let alone it was first introduced nearly 20 years ago. Just compare it to a LMT, KAC or HK417.
