HOT GAT or FUDD CRAP? German Magic or Custom Tragic?

Welcome everyone to the 131st edition of ‘Hot Gat or Fudd Crap?’, one of our many series here on TFB. If you’re new to the series, this is where we look at the most obscure firearms that are actually for sale and ask the question – is this Gat a sweet deal or only has a Fudd appeal? Each week the TFB staff weighs in with their thoughts, but readers get the final say in the poll at the bottom of each article.

In our last edition, our poll showed that you, the readers, decided the gold-clad 1911 was a hot gat.

HGFC - Classy Carry or Cartel Ready? - Poll Results

At this time the original auction has ended after a fifteen bid bidding war. When the dust settled, it was GunBroker buyer Ballerryan who emerged victorious with a final bid of $4,125. Congratulations to you on the purchase of your certified hot gat.

In this week’s edition of HGFC, we look at a custom German SIG P220 chambered in .45 ACP. As is tradition, this very detailed gat is currently up for sale on GunBroker for $3,295 Current Bid, or $3,895 Buy It Now.

Let’s see what the Staff had to say about this week’s offering:

“I think they messed up on their paint by numbers kit” – Rusty S.

“You would have to pay me $3k to take that eyesore” – Nick C.

“Is this the one that shoots foam darts, or gell balls?” – Tim C.

“Hot and cold lava? Either way, drop it in Mount Doom!” – Giorgio O.

“This frame looks like something that elementary-school-age Will P. might’ve made with his Creepy Crawlers machine, circa 1993.” – Will P.

Selling this very custom gat is GunBroker seller TJsCustomGunworks, located in Culver City CA. Let’s see what they had to say about this decked-out German Sig.

Full TJ’s Custom Sig Sauer P220 Red&Black + Duracoat Speckle&Webbing + Teflon +++++

For auction here is one of my extreme custom Sig Sauer creations. This gun is built on a good old style German P220 .45 ACP. The frame was stripped & high polished, and then custom anodized fire engine red and black ($1000 finish modification). The slide is finished in a silver Duracoat with black speckling & marbling, and black Duracoat in the cocking serrations. The grips are Sig factory checkered with a marbled silver/black Duracoat. The small parts, including the semi-bobbed hammer were all melted (rounded & smoothed) and then finished in my own black Teflon finish. SigLite tritium night sights, with my DayGlo highlighting on the front sight. A jewelled barrel hood, and polished barrel round & guide rod. This gun features my TJ short ergo-trigger in polished stainless steel, and also my stainless hex grip screws. Naturally this pistol also has my full action / trigger / reliability package.

I have been doing custom work on Sig Sauer pistols for nearly 40 years now, but I rarely actually sell any of my own guns, I am not in the gun selling business, I am a custom pistolsmith. So if you want one of my full custom Sigs, this is a good opportunity to get one without waiting for the long custom process, and you won’t find a better base Sig to build on! (Gen3 P220) This is a true collectors piece, as well as an awesome shooter!

You can see the pricing of all the custom work on my web site:

HOT GAT or FUDD CRAP? German Magic or Custom Tragic?

Firearms enthusiasts will commonly have one gun in each category they consider to be a sacred cow. Something that shouldn’t be modified or accessorized because it’s a classic. For me, that’s the iconic German steel frame SIG Sauer P series handguns. These are already incredibly rare and valuable, so why someone would customize one to this extent is beyond me.

HOT GAT or FUDD CRAP? German Magic or Custom Tragic?

I honestly don’t have the slightest idea what’s going on with this paint job. I guess high-vis sights are out as well? The message I’m getting is I should have been painting my front sight orange this whole time. Now don’t get me wrong TJ, I’m not questioning the quality of your work, but it’s commonly known that SIG does upgrades from or by the factory. At the end of the day, I think I’d rather just send a plain jane black gun to the custom shop.

Beauty is certainly in the eye of the beholder on this one. Even with it’s classic roots, I think this gun is going to have a hard time finding a new home for just over $3k. As always though, I could be wrong, and that’s why I leave it up to you, the readers, to decide.

I'm not sure if this is worse than the $1500 they want for an XD subcompact.

Operating on the premise that paint jobs somehow equal Fuddness, this is Fudd.

It looks like a 9 year old got a hold of Photoshop but somehow it exists in real life.
