[SHOT 2022] The 44 Auto Mag Makes an Appearance at Range Day

[SHOT 2022] The 44 Auto Mag Makes an Appearance at Industry Day

Auto Mag made a special appearance this year during SHOT Show 2022 Industry Dat at the Range via Palmetto State Armory. PSA graciously offered Auto Mag a spot at their lane so that the company could show off the latest functional improvements to the legendary .44 Auto Mag pistol. We were able to speak with Patrick Henry, owner of Auto Mag Ltd., Co about the pistol and he showed us two variants of the pistol. We also got a chance to finally shoot the pistol after seeing it displayed on the showroom for the past 6 years.

Getting to shoot the 44 Auto Mag pistol has been an item on my firearms bucket list for quite some time and I am happy to say that I’ve finally accomplished that. We learned from Patrick in a quite honest heart to heart interview that the company has been hard at work over the last 6 years to make the Auto Mag pistol both reliable and safe. In total, over 50 changes to the design were made.

We also learned that there is an additional version of the Auto Mag pistol being released called the Raven Edition which features a blacked-out finish with wood grips which I think perfectly contrasts the highly polished chrome finish of the original Auto Mag design. So while the look and feel of the gun are the same, it is now also extremely reliable and extremely safe with hundreds or thousands of people being able to shoot the 44 Auto Mag at range day.

The pistol does have some pretty sound recoil but it isn’t wrist breaking and this is partially due to the unique rotating bolt action that the Auto Mag uses. The Auto Mag pistol should be available for order now, but due to supply chain issues, Mr. Henry has stated in an update email that the company is currently experiencing a 5 to 6-month backlog on both the 6.5″ and 8.5″ models. However, at the time of writing, several Raven Edition pistols are available to ship within the next 3 months. Additionally, Starline Brass will be producing new brass for the 44 Auto Mag cartridge.

What are your thoughts on the Auto Mag pistol? Do you currently own one of the older models or do you plan on picking up one of the new and improved models? Let us know down in the comments!
