    Defensive Stance

At SHOT 2022, we got a chance to handle and shoot the new Savage Stance 9mm pistol. Announced just over a month ago, the Stance is Savage’s first concealable semi-automatic pistol since 1928.  Ranging from $479 to $561 MSRP, they represent another offering in the crowded subcompact 9mm pistol space, yet at a decent price to features ratio.

SHOT 2022 was the first chance we had to get our hands on this little pistol to see how it shot, so how’d it do?  Immediately on picking up the Savage Stance, we noticed the firm, yet comfortable grip-tape style grip texture.  The pistol sits very securely in the hand with or without gloves on, and that’s a good thing when controlling smaller handguns.

It’s nigh impossible to shoot for groups at Industry Day, but the stance solidly clanged every plate we set the sights on, using a slight 6 o’clock hold. The sights are very good and easy to focus on for a handgun of its size. The 7 and 8 round magazines dropped free easily, and the trigger, while having an average pull for handguns in this category, had an excellent and short reset. Follow-up shots were very easy to rapidly put on steel at 25 yards as well.

While I found the Stance to be a very competent single stack 9mm, I hold out hope that Savage will introduce a semi-automatic pistol more in line with the aesthetic appearance of their early twentieth century pistols someday soon.

The Savage Stance isn’t the only new(er) Savage products geared toward defensive use introduced since Savage was acquired by Long Range Acquisition, LLC. SHOT Industry Day at the Range 2022 also was the first chance we got to shoot with the Savage Renegauge Security and Competition configurations. The padded buttpad and comb on the Renegauge in any configuration really does an excellent job of recoil mitigation. The Ghost ring sights on the Renegauge security are crisp and easy to use, and the 9+1 capacity of the Renegauge competition allows one to dust long strings of clays without a reload.  Both configurations were also very easy to load as well, due to a generously sized loading port.
