Smith Tactics has released a new AR-15 charging handle called SIDE-KICK Co-CHARGER. This is a drop-in product (for mil-spec upper receivers) that provides a left-side non-reciprocating charging handle while still retaining the standard AR-15 charging possibility. Let’s take a look at the key features of this product and see what sets it apart from similar charging handles available on the market.

The Smith Tactics SIDE-KICK Co-CHARGER charging handle is made of 6061 T6 billet aluminum and has a mil-spec hard coat Type 3 anodized finish. The contact points with the upper receiver are Teflon coated. One of the key features is that the left-side handle folds forward becoming less of a snag hazard and it is designed to stay locked in place when deployed until the shooter consciously folds it forward. The SIDE-KICK Co-CHARGER charging handle is advertised to clear most optics mounts and as any other side charging handle allows racking the bolt without breaking your cheek weld. It is also possible to adjust the side handle folding angle which should be especially useful when shooting with gloved hands. The tension of the detent latch is also adjustable thus allowing to set a preferred latching/unlatching pressure.
While AR charging handles of this style have existed before, the Smith Tactics’ take on the concept is pretty interesting because of its overall design and the adjustability options it provides. Let us know in the comments section what do you think about the Smith Tactics SIDE-KICK Co-CHARGER charging handle and this style of AR-15 charging handles in general.
