Good afternoon everyone and welcome back to TFB’s Silencer Saturday brought to you by Yankee Hill Machine, manufacturers of the YHM Phantom 22 rimfire suppressor. Last week we discussed the new Griffin Armament EXPLORR ET3 T-300 rifle can. This week we have a mash up of news and reviews, starting with some subsonic shotgunning with a new release from Seismic Ammunition. Have you felt the recoil of a 2.5 ounce slug going just over 1,000 feet per second? Let’s take a look.

SILENCER SATURDAY #207: Subsonic Shotgunning – Seismic Ammo QuakeMaker Subsonic Slugs

Subsonic Shotgunning – Seismic Ammo QuakeMaker +M Slugs

I am on record saying that the Seismic Ammo hybrid case 180gr 9mm ammo is some of the best performing suppressor rounds on the market. Reliable and very quiet with the right silencer, the Seismic rounds offer near 300BLK performance in a 9mm footprint. I had always assumed that we would see an expansion of their caliber lineup, but I would not have guessed that 12 gauge shells would be Seismic’s latest release.

We will start off with a basic physics refresher on mass and velocity. There are basically three ways of obtaining subsonic muzzle velocities: a lower powder charge, a larger projectile weight, or a combination of the two. And since decreasing the powder charge to obtain lower velocities will result in anemic energy levels, increasing projectile weight is the logical choice to achieve subsonic shotgunning. Let’s run the numbers.

Let’s convert ounces to grains for an easier comparison:

    • 2.5 ounces = 1094 grains

Let’s calculate energy in foot pounds:

    • Formula: Energy = (Weight * Velocity Squared) /450395
    • Calculation: Energy = (1094 * 1050 ^2)/450395
    • Result: 2678 ft lbs of energy

    As a comparison:

    • A 147 gr 9mm round traveling at the same velocity results in 360 ft lbs

    Specifications:

    • Manufacturer’s Page: https://seismicammo.com
    • MSRP: $14.99/5 Shells; $89.94/30 Shells; $179.88/60 Shells
    • 12 Gauge
    • 2 3/4” Shells
    • 2.5 ounce sabot slug
    • 1050 FPS muzzle velocity

I dissected one of these heavy beasts in the name of science. I like the trademark ‘S’ on the tip of the slug.

The slug takes over half of the internal shell volume.

There is a deep conical pocket in the base of the 2.5 ounce slugs. I butchered the base removing it from the shell.

Using the SilencerCo Salvo 12 in its longest configuration, the Seismic Ammo QuakeMaker shells are as quiet as a 12 gauge short barrel pump shotgun is ever going to be. I would still recommend hearing protection, but unless you live a row house, you aren’t going to piss off your neighbors with a few shots. Also, if you are shooting a suppressed shotgun in your row house, you may have other issues that need to be addressed.

I shot one shell without hearing protection and while it is “loud”, it is much less loud than an unsuppressed 12 gauge with any barrel length. I’m impressed and I think it’s worth a look.

And I’d classify the recoil as “heavy”.

    SilencerCo Harvester EVO

SilencerCo dropped a new release this week, the Harvester EVO. The EVO is meant for bolt action rifles for either hunting or target shooting applications. At just over 10 ounces, it’s light and with an MSRP under $700, it’s affordable. Depending on your dealer, Silencer Shop has the EVO listed at $599 with an additional manufacturers rebate.

I view silencers like the SilencerCo Harvester EVO as a gateway drug for hunters and target shooters – they can ‘set it and forget it’ on their favorite rifle. Then, when they are hooked, they can start shopping for an Omega 9K, a Warlock, an Omega 46M… you get the idea.

SilencerCo Releases New Harvester EVO Lightweight Suppressor

December 14, 2021 — West Valley City, UT — SilencerCo is excited to introduce the Harvester EVO, a lightweight suppressor designed for hunters and precision shooters. This product is the successor to SilencerCo’s Harvester 300, enhanced to include a few key features and currently available at SilencerCo Retailers.

Accommodating calibers ranging from .223 REM to .300 WIN, the Harvester EVO is the ideal suppressor for .30 caliber bolt-guns and rifles. Consumer feedback on the previous Harvester models led SilencerCo engineers to make the EVO shorter, lighter, more affordable and ready to go right out of the box.

“The most impressive phenomenon of the Harvester EVO is it’s lightweight nature despite being created from rugged, hard-use materials,” said SilencerCo Senior Product Development Specialist, Dewie Vieira. “Weighing just 10.8 ounces, it is constructed of 17-4 heat treated stainless steel, inconel and cobalt 6 with a tubeless design. This gives the EVO an edge over other hunting suppressors.”

Not only is the Harvester EVO less likely to get caught on bushes and brush in outdoor environments, but it is capable of withstanding the most extreme conditions typically encountered by hunters and precision shooters.

    Product Specifications:

    • Rated for calibers ranging from .223REM/5.56NATO to .300 WIN
    • Tubeless and extremely lightweight design
    • Weighs 10.8 ounces
    • Measures 6.24” in length
    • Constructed with cobalt-6, inconel and 17-4 heat treated stainless steel materials
    • Compatible with Bravo Mounting Accessories
    • Ships with both a Bravo 1⁄2 x 28 and Bravo 5⁄8 x 24 Direct Thread Mount
    • MSRP of $680

    ATF eForms Technology Upgrade

It has begun. Yesterday, the ATF started the migration of data to the new NFA eForms forms system that will once again add Form 4 application submissions. I’m also hoping for an efficiency upgrade that will allow all of you to get your forms back faster. I’ve included links to the ATF guidance on both new and existing eForms users. Follow the steps to get setup and submit your forms.

    The New ATF eForms

Thanks for reading everyone. Be safe, have fun, and we’ll see you back next weekend for another Silencer Saturday.
