This week we have a mash up of news and reviews, starting with some subsonic shotgunning with a new release from Seismic Ammunition. Subsonic Shotgunning – Seismic Ammo QuakeMaker +M Slugs

I am on record saying that the Seismic Ammo hybrid case 180gr 9mm ammo is some of the best performing suppressor rounds on the market. Reliable and very quiet with the right silencer, the Seismic rounds offer near 300BLK performance in a 9mm footprint. I had always assumed that we would see an expansion of their caliber lineup, but I would not have guessed that 12 gauge shells would be Seismic’s latest release.

We will start off with a basic physics refresher on mass and velocity. There are basically three ways of obtaining subsonic muzzle velocities: a lower powder charge, a larger projectile weight, or a combination of the two. And since decreasing the powder charge to obtain lower velocities will result in anemic energy levels, increasing projectile weight is the logical choice to achieve subsonic shotgunning. Let’s run the numbers.

Let’s convert ounces to grains for an easier comparison:

• 2.5 ounces = 1094 grains

Let’s calculate energy in foot pounds:

• Formula: Energy = (Weight * Velocity Squared) /450395
• Calculation: Energy = (1094 * 1050 ^2)/450395
• Result: 2678 ft lbs of energy

As a comparison:

• A 147 gr 9mm round traveling at the same velocity results in 360 ft lbs

I dissected one of these heavy beasts in the name of science. I like the trademark ‘S’ on the tip of the slug.

The slug takes over half of the internal shell volume.

There is a deep conical pocket in the base of the 2.5 ounce slugs. I butchered the base removing it from the shell.

Using the SilencerCo Salvo 12 in its longest configuration, the Seismic Ammo QuakeMaker shells are as quiet as a 12 gauge short barrel pump shotgun is ever going to be. I would still recommend hearing protection, but unless you live a row house, you aren’t going to piss off your neighbors with a few shots. Also, if you are shooting a suppressed shotgun in your row house, you may have other issues that need to be addressed.

I shot one shell without hearing protection and while it is “loud”, it is much less loud than an unsuppressed 12 gauge with any barrel length. I’m impressed and I think it’s worth a look.

And I’d classify the recoil as “heavy”.

SilencerCo Harvester EVO

SilencerCo dropped a new release this week, the Harvester EVO. The EVO is meant for bolt action rifles for either hunting or target shooting applications.
