HOT GAT or FUDD CRAP? Practical or Tacticool Charter Arms Explorer?

Welcome everyone to the 119th edition of ‘Hot Gat or Fudd Crap?’, one of our many series here on TFB. If you’re new to the series, this is where we look at the most obscure firearms that are actually for sale and ask the question – is this Gat a sweet deal or only has a Fudd appeal?  Each week the TFB staff weighs in with their thoughts, but readers get the final say in the poll at the bottom of each article.

In our last edition, our poll showed that you, the readers, decided the custom blue Luger was just fudd crap.

So there are a few things we need to move past before we can actually appreciate this gun.  First off is this front sight that looks like it might be hot glued onto the barrel.  I’m not sure how or why this seemed like a good idea, but alas here we are.

I’d like to point out to the long-time readers of this series, this is an estate sale gun.  So yes, we can now confirm that there are fudds putting punisher skulls on guns.  It’s not just reserved for the mall ninjas of the gun community.  With that out of the way, lets move on to why this gun is awesome.

The Charter Arms Explorer II is the pistol version of the Armalite AR-7 design.  Chambered in 22LR it features an awesome removable barrel that unscrews from the receiver for transport or storage.  Considering this one has a threaded muzzle as well, this could be a ton of fun suppressed.

These came with either 10 or 15 rounds magazines from the factory.  Considering that common .22LR pistols still have similar factory capacities, this design has aged incredibly well.  Not to mention, you get that awesome broom handle Mauser look, without having to pay broom handle Mauser prices.  While I may not agree with all the accessories and ornaments, I have to admit it’s a cool little pistol.

So, is this gun worth it for just over $400 with the optic and mount (that’s apparently fairly difficult to find)?  Or is this pistol a little too modified and a tad out of date?  As always I leave it up to you, the reader, to decide.
