So called "ballistic" eyewear have been around since Gargoyles, and as far as BCG's, the issue black frames weren't so bad compared to the huge wrapped lenses on the Gar's'. I found mine in a box in the basement and talk about retro - Since about 1980.
They are still around in more updated styling, Magpul jumped in with both feet, and even China makes $10 lookalikes sold at a major Big Box who just marked theirs all down to $1. The "look" of Operator Grade goggles is pretty set because of the mechanical characteristics, it's the actual need for impact protection above the normal "shop glasses" that are around which boost the price another $50 or more.
Of course, none actually stop bullets - they get close but the reality is no, they will not. Just like there are grades of plates and vests that work up the scale, something the next size bigger and more powerful will defeat them. You accept that risk or you don't. The important takeaway is to wear something - a bad round, kaboom, stray jacket or extractor, even dodging defective bits of substrate working on the job, we all need to wear safety lenses of some sort. Having just gone thru double cataract surgery with correction of 20/200 Rx, my new eyes are a wonderful blessing - I wonder how I even traveled home on vacation before. And so did my wife. The interim condition was a frustrating exercise of one great and one bad eye, and I'm knowledgeable enough having gone thru that to say you do not want to have either injured ever. Especially your dominant and experienced sighting eye. Being half able to see means not being able to shoot. It's worse than giving up the keys to the truck.
Wear some kind of protection and don't take your eyes for granted. It takes a major grant to even fund repairing them.
Only the military can buy these? It said I need to be military or first responder to get an account.
