Springfield Armory SA-35 9mm – An Authentic Hi-Power Reproduction

For those who might already be devoted fans of Springfield Armory on social media, you may have noticed an intentionally cryptic photograph they shared last week. This black and white image depicted a gunsmith toiling away at his workbench on some unknown firearm with the phrase: “We’re bringing it back.” This lead to a lot of speculation that Springfield might be reproducing the M1 Garand or something else equally iconic. If you were clever enough though and picked up on some clues that Springfield was laying down, you likely already identified their new firearm. A clock displayed the time 19:35 which could mean 7:35pm or the year 1935. There is also a photo of one of the greatest firearm inventors who ever lived: John Moses Browning. So, what did John Browning invent in 1935?… He invented the first double-stack, semi-auto pistol ever in the Hi-Power. So, Springfield Armory is proud to announce their Hi-Power clone, reproduction in the SA-35 9mm!

Springfield Armory @ TFB:

There have been many clones of the Browning Hi-Power throughout history, but none seem to have captured the true spirit, aesthetic, and classical look of John Browning’s famous design as well as Springfield’s SA-35 might have. The name might sound odd, but the moniker likely suggests Springfield Armory (SA) and “35” is a tip of the hat to the year the Hi-Power was invented (1935). The rest of the specifications can be read below as presented by Springfield Armory:

  • Caliber: 9mm
  • Barrel: 4.7″ Cold Hammer Forged, 1:10 Twist
  • Slide and Frame: Forged Carbon Steel, Blued
  • Sights: White Dot Front, Serrated Tactical Rack Rear
  • Recoil System: SA-35™ Recoil Spring & Guide Rod
  • Grips: Checkered Walnut
  • Magazines: (1) 15-Round
  • Weight: 31.5 oz
  • Length: 7.8″
  • Height: 4.8″

There are a lot of modern touches to the SA-35 yet they do not distract from the timeless appearance. The manual safety is lightly extended, the magazine well is ever so slightly beveled for easier magazine insertions, and it boasts modern sights among other changes. Probably the most surprising feature is the price. A really good Hi-Power clone you would expect to retail for $1,000+ yet the Springfield Armory SA-35 has an MSRP of only $699!

Based on one of the most prolific and popular pistols in small arms history, the Springfield Armory® SA-35 gives today’s shooters a modern take on a revered classic. Featuring subtle but significant upgrades to John Moses Browning’s original P-35 design, the 9mm SA-35 captures the appeal of the “wood and steel” era of arms making while offering the upgraded enhancements of today’s defensive pistols. Made in the U.S.A., the SA-35 features rugged forged steel parts for strength and durability, improved ergonomics and enhanced controls, a factory tuned trigger, modern sights, an improved feed ramp design, and an increased 15-round capacity.

The Springfield Armory SA-35 9mm – their modern take on the classic Hi-Power – is now available and is turning heads straight out the gate. Be sure to watch TFB, TFBTV, and AllOutdoor for further coverage of this new pistol as well as in-depth reviews. As always, let us know all of your thoughts in the Comments below! We always appreciate your feedback.

I have been a High Power enthusiast for quite a few years.
Thanks for a great introduction to a new version of a real classic pistol.
The author may have been off a bit on a few history details but it is still great to have a new option for such a classic design, and to inspire discussion regarding the pistol's history.

Just thought your author and readership might like to know that BH Spring Solutions (a good place to go for all things High Power) is planning a thorough evaluation and extensive multi-thousand round test of the new Springfield Armory SA-35 in the immediate future. Anyone can subscribe to their email newsletter which will feature the results of the SA-35 evaluation when completed. I would suspect a link to the evaluation may be posted at their web site as well.
