SILENCER SATURDAY #198: The SilencerCo Hybrid 46M – A Can For All Seasons

If you would have asked me last year about multi-caliber suppressors and where they rank in the hierarchy of the NFA world, I probably would have given you answer that started with the “jack of all trades, master of none” sentiment. By design, silencers that are designed for large, high-pressure rounds need to be overbuilt, which means they can be heavy. So swapping one of these “universal” suppressors to smaller calibers and hosts can turn the combo into an unwieldy annoyance.

However, the other side of that coin is the fact that most people don’t shoot .45-70 or .338 LM enough to justify a dedicated suppressor for a single platform. If you can get a silencer that will handle your big bore hunting rifle for 10-20 rounds for one week a year and be able to repurpose it to a carbine the rest of the year, that seems like a solid strategy to me.

I think both the Omega 36M and Hybrid 46M excel in these areas.

The Hybrid 46M is compatible with centerfire rifle cartridges from 5.56 NATO to .45–70 GOV, and centerfire pistol cartridges up to .45ACP.

The 36M and 46M are rated for barrels as short as 10” for .223 Remington/5.56mm NATO, 16” barrels for .308 Winchester/7.62mm NATO, and 18” barrels for .300 Winchester Magnum and .338 Lapua Magnum.

Additionally, the Hybrid 46M is rated down to 16 ̋ barrels for 45–70 and 458 SOCOM. The Hybrid is rated down to 18 ̋ barrels for all magnum calibers up to 338 Lapua Mag.

The fact is, I was looking at multi-host, multi-caliber, and modular suppressors as being one-and-done options for people who want a do it all solution. Instead I think suppressors like the SilencerCo Hybrid 46M is best suited for those who sporadically want to suppress a unique host such as a .458 SOCOM, but will have it pull double duty on a pistol caliber carbine the rest of the time. If I had to guess, the majority of silencer owners do not own a rifle suppressor with a bore larger than .308, meaning a larger bore can would be a heavy investment. The compatibility of the Hybrid 46M then becomes one of its strongest selling points.

Let’s get the downsides out of the way first. As I sit here on a beautiful fall Saturday morning, I am waiting for FedEx to deliver a 5/8 x 24 direct thread mount. The Hybrid 46M comes with a Charlie ASR mount that is compatible with ASR flash hiders and muzzle brakes. Unfortunately, the 46M doesn’t come with a either a muzzle device or a direct thread adapter.

In my opinion, buying a .46 caliber suppressor that costs around $1,000 should mean that it comes with the ability to suppress my big bore rifle right out of the box. It’s not a deal breaker, but it is slightly annoying.

Speaking of waiting on good things, I ordered 40 rounds of these I.Q . Munitions 550gr subsonic rounds from Detroit Ammo Co. To say I’m excited is an understatement.

My other minor detractor is the overall weight at 20 ounces with the ASR mount, the Hybrid 46M isn’t the heaviest suppressor on the market, but it isn’t exactly light. However I’m not sure it’s possible to get it any lighter without increasing costs or reducing capabilities. Titanium construction will reduce high temperature performance and raise the price. If you want the ability to suppress large caliber, high pressure rounds, it’s going to cost you. The weight of the 46M is not a deal breaker.

Enough of the negativity, let’s talk about the 46M’s selling points.

When it comes to performance, this suppressor knows what its job and does it well. Supersonic .308 rounds through the SIG Sauer 716i was nearly pleasant which I would say is a solid accomplishment for that round and system. And that was with the .46 bore end cap. In the short configuration, the Hybrid 46M takes as much of the bark out of the .308 blast as possible for a sub six inch suppressor. If you were expecting Hollywood quiet, you should probably head back to our primer on suppressor basics before making any purchase decisions.

My favorite 300BLK platform is the SIG Sauer MCX Virtus, a short stroke piston gun that, especially in the 6.75 inch and 9 inch barrel lengths, is born to be suppressed. Surprisingly, the Hybrid 46M handled the subsonic 300BLK rounds nicely. Usually, suppressors with internal geometries designed for high velocity rounds are just average performers with subsonic loads. While the 46M is not the quietest subsonic 300BLK suppressor on the market, it definitely won’t disappoint you.

The 46M is an above average performer on pistol hosts. Although, I refuse to swap end caps so I don’t have a caliber/bore size mishap. It’s a bit heavy in the long configuration and a bit more compact (but a bit louder) in the short configuration.

Part of me really wants to break one of my unwritten rules of pitting two manufacturers against each other and do a head-to-head test of the SilencerCo Hybrid 46M and the Dead Air Primal. However, I still believe that these tests are unfair to both parties; I’m just one moron with a subjective opinion and I worry someone would hit the buy button solely based on what I write. There are numerous resources available to evaluate suppressors, including manufacturers, distributors, dealers, outside testing services, and other internet reviewers. I still want to be the reviewer that judges each new silencer model on their individual merits, But I also want to see which one is quieter. I’m open to input.

If you are looking for a modular big-bore suppressor that can adapt to other hosts throughout the year, the SilencerCo Hybrid 46M is for you. My suggestion is to treat this as a mission-specific purchase that has the added ability to suppress a whole host of, well, other hosts.

Update: As I often do before hitting publish, I ran out for a few more shots through the MARK23 and the Hybrid 46M. While the weight hasn’t changed, it is not terrible, even on a pistol.
