Welcome everyone to the 111th edition of ‘Hot Gat or Fudd Crap?’, one of our many series here on TFB. If you’re new to the series, this is where we look at the most obscure firearms that are actually for sale and ask the question – is this Gat a sweet deal or only has a Fudd appeal?  Each week the TFB staff weighs in with their thoughts, but readers get the final say in the poll at the bottom of each article.

In our last edition, our poll showed that you, the readers, decided the Vampire Hunter themed Colt Python was a hot gat.

At this time the original auction has ended without the Python selling.  We can only hope the owner found more vampires to hunt, or this engraved Python has found its way to a new home.

Master Gunsmith Bill Calfee (author fo the book The Art of Rimfire Accuracy) built and converted primarily rimfire pistols and rifles into some of the most accurate competition level firearms.  This pistol started out life as a Remington XP-100 single-shot, bolt action pistol before Bill converted it to one of his rare and highly coveted Calfee-XP’s.  Remington never chambered the XP-100 in .22LR, but there was a bit demand from competitors from benchrest to IHMSA silhoutte for one.  This is widely considered one of, if not the most accurate custom .22LR pistols ever made.  I am not entire sure how many where made but I have been told it is less than 75, each serialized with this one being #32 made.  This pistol was purchased and shot in IHMSA competition and is an absolute machine.  The trigger is currently set for competition, at about 4oz.  The pistol does retain the ability to use any of numerous third party triggers if desired.  The pistol currently sits in a custom painted HS Prescision fiberglass stock.

This isn’t the first time HGFC has featured an XP-100.  Back in the 18th Edition I was reminded by our commenters that these XP-100’s were an interesting way to get all the rifle energy you were looking for in a compact non-sbr package.  With that said, I don’t know if that rule still applies to a custom XP-100 that’s been re-chambered in .22LR.

I’m not doubting master gunsmith Bill Calfee’s ability to make a sweet target pistol, but this seems a little over the top.  The attention to detail throughout is pretty impressive on this gun.  Yes, I’ll always think these XP-100 custom (or factory) grips look strange (with or without the meriflage paint scheme).  However, I can see how they’re desirable amongst target shooters. With that said, this gun better shoot groups the size of dimes at 100yds to justify the price tag.

So what’s the value of a gun built by a master gunsmith who’s allegedly only made less than 75 of these?  Is the name enough to justify the price tag, or is this destined to sit in someone’s private collection forever?  I can’t answer those questions.  That’s why I leave it up to you, the readers, to decide.
