    Al Capone's "Favorite" 1911

The infamous gangster, bootlegger, and loan shark Al Capone is more than deserving of his legendary status within American culture. Capone died shortly after WWII in 1947 in Miami Beach, Florida but his legacy continued to live on and still remains to this day a core piece of Americana. Recently, the surviving relatives of Capone have released over 150 items from his personal collection to be auctioned off sometime in October in Sacramento, California, and will include the notorious gangster’s favorite 1911 pistol.

The auction of the firearms and other personal items is to be held by Witherell’s Luxury Auctioneers in Sacramento, California and will even feature firearms possessed by Sonny Capone as he was somewhat of a gun collector. However, front and center for us here is Al Capone’s “favorite” handgun – a Colt 1911 .45 ACP pistol.

Capone’s favorite 1911 features a beautifully engraved slide and deer antler grips. According to the listing on the auction site, the pistol only features a partial serial number due to part of it being removed during the engraving process – it is unknown when this engraving was done. The pistol alone has a starting bid price of $50,000 but is expected to sell for somewhere between $100,000 and $150,000 – a pretty penny for a dubiously reliable although iconic pistol.

Al Capone’s semi-automatic Colt 1908 .380 ACP pistol will also be for sale and is set to start bidding at $15,000 and expected to sell for between $30,000-$60,000. Other firearms within the action belonged to Albert Francis (Sonny) Capone and are expected to sell for a much more reasonable price. These firearms include an M1 Carbine ($1,000-$2,000), Colt Mk IV 1911 ($500-$1000), Colt 1911 ($500-$1,000), Walther PP ($500-$1,000), and a Ruger Mk I Target Model ($250-$500).
