Berger has issued a safety recall for a small number of boxes of their 77-grain .223 ammunition.

Berger has issued a safety recall for a small number of boxes of their 77-grain .223 ammunition.

If you shoot match-grade .223 ammo, this alert is for you. Earlier this year, in February, the bullet makers at ammo manufacturing company Berger announced two new additions to their .223 Remington caliber offerings. They released a 73-grain boat tail target load and a 77-grain OTM Tactical model. According to the official product description, the 77-grain version was meant to be “…a premium solution for Mil/LE applications with 1:8” twist platforms and faster. The 77 Grain OTM Tactical projectile has a superior ballistic coefficient and performance to any comparable projectile in its weight class. Its OTM design and sleek, tangent ogive profile, provides flawless performance from magazine-feel applications in any gas-gun platform. Trusted by professionals around the globe, the .223 Remington, 77 Grain OTM Tactical delivers when lives are on the line.”

    Berger Bullets @ TFB:

These heavyweight 77-grain loads were designed to provide a high degree of accuracy for applications like military and law enforcement use, areas in which precision shooting can be a matter of life or death.

Unfortunately, a problem has been discovered with a small amount of the 77-grain rounds sent to retailers a couple of months after release, in April of this year. If you have any of these rounds from the lots listed below, please make sure not to use them in gas-operated guns like the AR-15. You can find the relevant part number and lot number on the box, as shown in the image below. It is worth noting that the company points out that the functionality of these rounds when used in bolt-action rifles should not be affected, and the failures should only appear with gas guns. Contact the manufacturer’s customer service department and they will be happy to replace your defective boxes with new, fully functional rounds. See the company’s website and press release copied below for details.
