Rangefinders have come a long way since their initial commercial release (in affordable formats) and we continue to see more and more features packed into these tiny little ranging devices. SIG Sauer and BaseMap have partnered up to bring customers one of the biggest innovations to the rangefinder market with the ability to mark ranged locations via BaseMap’s Remote Marker Technology.

BaseMap is a smartphone-based GPS map system that is free to try. BaseMap allows hunters and outdoorsmen the ability to navigate, customize and even share their maps for the purposes of hunting or mountaineering. Better yet, BaseMap can run completely offline without a cellular connection so you never need to worry about having cell service to have access to your detailed maps.

BaseMap’s new Remote Marker technology can now be used to mark the precise location of any distant object using your laser rangefinder. After you’ve ranged the object, you can then use the app to sync your rangefinder and phone to then navigate to your ranged target. With remote markers, you can much more efficiently navigate your way to the desired location if the path isn’t clear and for hunters, you can mark the location where you shot your target so that it is easier to find through thick woods or long distances. BaseMap’s service requires a monthly subscription which can be had for as little as $29.99 a year and gives you access to 3D maps, high-speed offline maps, public/private land markers, live location sharing, SmartMarkers, and a complete weather center for the most comprehensive planning.

What are your thoughts on the addition of this technology? Is this something that you find useful or is there a more tried and true traditional method you have for trekking across unknown terrain? Let us know down in the comments.
