Somerville TX PD Deploys FACT Duty Weapon-Mounted Cameras
It’s a challenging time in law enforcement, and police leadership should make every effort to be transparent with the communities in which they serve. Should the Somerville Police Department experience an officer-involved shooting, I want to make every effort to be transparent to the citizens of Somerville.
-Somerville Police Chief Jake Sullivan
The adoption and fielding of the FACT Duty cameras mark a first for police departments in central Texas. Somerville PD is now the 9th agency within Texas to implement the Weapon Mounted Camera. Unlike traditional officer-worn body cams, weapon-mounted cameras offer investigators an unobstructed view of events that transpire during a use-of-force event.
The camera within the FACT Duty features a 1080p full-HD digital camera, a 500 lumen tactical light, and turns on and starts recording the instant an officer draws their weapon from a holster. This eliminates the possibility of an officer neglecting to turn on their camera during a critical event possibly leaving out critical evidence. Viridian also sells weapon-mounted cameras for commercial use with their X5L and XTL weapon-mounted cameras which will fit seamlessly within holsters that can house Streamlight TLR-1 weapon lights.
