POTD: Kalashnikov AKV-521 in .366 TKM

Recently we had a look at the Kalashnikov AKV-521 carbine with interchangeable uppers. In this Photo Of The Day, the time has come for the version chambered in .366 TKM, aimed at the Russian civilian market. The .366 TKM is a redesigned 7.62×39 cartridge that has been necked up to accommodate a 9,55 mm “slug” and cut to 37 mm (9.55x37mm). The caliber is said to be accurate up to around 100-150 meters.

Only about the last 15 cm of the barrel are rifled.

Note the new safety.

Due to Russian gun laws, a rifle license can be obtained only after a minimum of 5 years of shotgun ownership. However, many people here want to own “military style” weapons for plinking, sport shooting, home defense and hunting, without that idiotic 5-year waiting period. ( Source)

So, I wonder, in Russia could you get your shotgun license, and an AKV with a .366 upper and then when you get your rifle license, could you just get a rifle caliber upper for it and swap them?

@mig1nc While technically possible, expect paperwork to kill the idea dead. Russian legislation is cumbersome when it comes to modding guns.

Any chance we could get this in the US? To have one AK that could take care of short range whitetail deer hunting, self defense, squirrels, and snakes with just a mag change would be very useful for me (my boss who isn’t a fan of guns in general is greatly afraid of snakes and is willing to eliminate them by any means necessary).

@KamadoBart The ballistics are almost identical to 7.62x39 out to 200m. This thing IS made in 5.45x39, .223rem and 7.62x39. To get it into US, you'd have to buy it in Europe somewhere and personally import it into US, if that is at all possible.
