This episode of the TFB Field Strip series involves the feature-rich FN FNX-45 Tactical, naturally chambered in .45 ACP. The FNX‘s predecessor, the FNP-45 Tactical was a contender in the Joint Combat Pistol trials of 2005 and 2006 to replace the Beretta M9 service pistol. Even though the JCP program was scrapped, the FNP lived on and was eventually redesigned into the FNX, and the FNX-45 Tactical was released commercially in late 2012. The FNX-45 Tactical stands out from the standard models in that it includes a longer, threaded barrel for suppressor use, as well as suppressor height iron sights and it’s also optics ready from the factory. This field strip comes courtesy of Black Sheep Armory II in Panama City Beach, Florida. Let’s dig in.
TFB FIELD STRIP: FN FNX-45 TACTICAL
BEFORE YOU FIELD STRIP ANY WEAPON, REMEMBER the four rules of gun safety:
- All guns are always loaded.
- Never let the muzzle cover anything you are not willing to destroy.
- Keep your finger off the trigger until your sights are on the target.
- Be sure of your target and what is beyond it
STEP 1. Since the phrase “I was just cleaning my gun and it went off” is sadly too common, please remove the magazine and lock the slide to the rear using the slide lock lever (all while following the above rules). Then visually and physically inspect the gun to make sure it’s empty.
STEP 2. With the slide still locked to the rear, unscrew the muzzle’s thread protector, and rotate the takedown lever down. As you can see in the following photo, the takedown lever can only be rotated once the curved cut on the slide is positioned directly above the pivot point of the lever.
STEP 3. Once the thread protector has been removed and the takedown lever is down, first take hold of the slide in one hand, then move the slide lock lever down to release the slide forward. Slowly walk the slide off the gun.
STEP 4. With the slide removed from the frame, the recoil spring can be slightly compressed, then moved downward from under the barrel. Then slide the barrel to the rear, out of the slide.
This ends the field strip process for the FN FNX-45 Tactical, reassemble in reverse order. I’d like to thank Black Sheep Armory again for their help with the TFB Field Strip series. TFB’s Phil White reviewed the non-tactical version of the FN FNX-45 if you’d like to see his article HERE.
