HOT GAT or FUDD CRAP? Is this AR-15 Regal or Ruined?

Welcome everyone to the 89th edition of Hot Gat or Fudd Crap, one of our many series here on TFB. If you’re new to the series, this is where we look at the most obscure firearms that are actually for sale and ask the question – is this Gat a sweet deal or only has a Fudd appeal?  Each week the TFB staff weighs in with their thoughts, but readers get the final say in the poll at the bottom of each article.

In our last edition, our poll showed that you, the readers, decided the gold Colt 1911 was fudd crap.

At this time the original auction is still active after being extended by the seller.  At the time of the writing, the current bid is $2,059 with the reserve still not met.  We’ll just have to see if someone has pockets deep enough to take this golden Colt home.

In this week’s edition of HGFC, we look at a wood-clad AR-15 chambered in .450 Bushmaster. As is tradition, this unique is currently up for sale on GunBroker for $1,000 Starting Bid or $5,999 Buy It Now.

Let’s see what the Staff had to say about this week’s offering:

That’s a complete bastardization of what Eugene Stoner was going for….. Where can I get one?” – Luke C.

Who would’ve thought that wood flooring would work on a free float handguard.” – Sam S.

“Those rail covers look like they’re off an old, old wooden ship called Diversity” – Matt M.

    “Fudd’s first AR.” – Rusty S.

“Trolling Fudds with an overall interesting platform and suppressor host. 8/10” – Giorgio O.

Selling this wooden-clad gat is GunBroker seller ksreloader, located in Pittsburg, KS.  Let’s see what they had to say about this uniquely themed AR.

Check out this One-Of-A-Kind AR15! To my knowledge this is the only AR in the world with exhibition grade cocobolo stock, pistol grip, and M-Lok rails on the handguard. Anderson lower with closed trigger guard, Aero Precision upper, 16″ barrel 1:24 twist (threaded 5/8 x 32…I used an adapter to attach my hybrid can with 5/8″ x 28 threads). 3lb drop in curved competition trigger, and full length A2 rifle recoil system. Scope is a Bushnell Bone Collector XLT 3-9×40. Exactly 100 rounds of Hornady Black down the tube. This rifle is BY FAR the SMOOTHEST bushy I’ve ever fired. The 1/2″ recoil pad is soft and comfortable. The target photo shows a 10 round group at 100 yards. 8 rounds through one ragged hole and two flyers which were my fault. This is a legendary firearm. Don’t miss your chance at it! 7 round Duramag magazine, bipod and hard case are included (suppressor not included). Buyer will have the option to get ammo, brass, and a brand new set of 450B reloading dies (ships separately from rifle).

I think the builder of this rifle took more time to consider the wood he’d be using on this build and then ordered the rest of the parts.  I’d rather not skimp on a lower receiver when shooting a caliber like .450 Bushmaster.  But hey, to each their own.

While the “woody” look is unique, I can’t quite see the value added.  This rifle seems to land in a very niche market segment that concerns itself with looking overtly, well sportsman.  At least the modifications that have been made can be rolled back, but the price tag certainly discourages that idea.

So is this cocobolo-clad AR in .450 Bushmaster worth the price (whatever that reserve may be) or has the seller inhaled a little too much paint thinner?  As always, I leave it up to you, the reader, to decide.
